Light and Sidewalks. The new Council held its first regular meeting. Tuesday night, and it was a rather extensive one, lasting till near mid night. The most important matter discussed and settled was that of lighting the streets. Mr. Schenck of the special Committee ap pointed to attend to the matter, reported that the Mutual Gas Co would contiuue gas for the open or torch burners at $1 50 per month, provided they *ere supplied with "checks" and the checks kept in good working order, other wis', or left buruiug as at present the compay would want $3.15 per light per month- The checked light is next to no light at all, and a light wind blows it out. The cost of the lights as now used at $3.15 per month would aggre gate between SO,OOO and $7,000 a year, making that out of the question. The Electric Light Co. of Butler offered to Inrnish from forty to liifty 2000-candle power lights at S9O each per year. This would be $3,600 per year for 40 lights, aud it is thought thai 41! lights get up about fifty feet from the street, and well lo.ated would light the town pretty well, and the Comniitteo reported in favor of contract ing for them. The Committee also had two offers for building electric light plants for 50 arc lights, with 10 miles of circuit, 75 H. P. engine, 8® O. P. boiler, etc., for $10,500, this not to include lot and house. The entire cost of a plant would be about $15,- 000, three men would be required to run it, and the Committee reported against risking it. The recommendation of the Committee was discussed for sometime, and bronght up the subject of Borough Finances. The millage for borough purposes is as high as the law allows, and the receipts amount to about SIO,OOO a year, now take $4,000 from this for light, $1,500 for water, and say $1,500 for salaries, and there is not much left for the innumerable rep.-tira and im provements continually called for, but "We must have light" as one member said, and the Council, by a vote of 12 to 1 decid ed to contract with the Electric Co. for five years. The lights will burn all night- The "moonlight" and "midnight" plans were descussed and rejected. The next important matter considered that night was that of sidewalks and grades for the same. The ordinance requires all sidewalks for the paved streets to be on grade, the enrb to be the guide, the fall to be J inch to the foot, an 1 the Bec'y was directed to notify all properly owners along paved streets to build or change their sidewalks to grade—"Do it right, let it strike who it will." On motion of Mr. Perrine, a resolution was adopted requiring the lligh Constable and Policeman to arrest all persons, old or yonr.g, carrying or using dangerous weap ons on our streets. Mr. Adam Smith was elected Street Commissioner for one year. The new Huckster's and Peddler's ordinace was amended and ordered pub lished; the Auditor's Report was held over till next meeting; the Sec'y will advertise for bids for the new sewers; the Street Committee will have Ist Street at crossing of Brady graded; the bond of Treas. Schenck was approved; the Ordinance as to Teamsters licenses will be amended; some sidewalks aud crossings were ordered, aad the Council adjoarned till the ltfih. Personal.
