From the N. Y. Weekly Despatch. Opium Eating. When -vyc consider the great amount of influence moral, intellectual, and pecu niary enlisted in behalf of the great temperanco reformation, and alacrity, also with which the better portion of all class es of the community engage in philanthro pic efforts for the amelioration of suffering humanity, it seems unaccountable that so pernicious a habit as that of opium eating should be so entirely overlooked. Some idea as to the extent of the hab it may be inferred from the quantity of the drug retailed in our city. One drug gist has stated that two pounds weekly is but a low estimate of his average retail Bales of opium and its preparations. Now we have, in this city, at a low estimate, five hundred retail drug stores ; of these, the probability is, there as many which sell over as there are which sell under that amout. It way, therefore, be safe to consider two pounds weekly as the av erage retail sales of these five hundred stores ; which will give us the alarming exhibit of 1,000 pounds weekly, or 52 000 pounds annually, retailed in this city alone not to mention the quantities pur chased by the same class of consumers from wholesale dealers. Large as this estimate may appear, it will not, we think, seem incredibly so, if we take into consideration that, even a larger quantity is consumed in England, :is well as in many other foreign countries. A London paper reveals the following curious particulars respecting the con sumption of opium in Great liritaiu, viz: A druggist of Ety, Cambridge county, containing some (i 000 inhabitants, has .old three cwt., or 33G pounds, annually. 1 n,tnth c..,n ,- , ii r ii In another small town, (the name of which , , o ?'i " arussi, liad sold -ii cwt. annually, and in other , n t .i ... J . small towns the quantity sold annually is slated to be still greater. Iu the towns of Huntington and El-, the annual con- sumption is stated to be 2,240 pounds, which, among 15,000 people, (their pres- ont population,) is an average of about 2k ounces to each inhabitant men, and wo- men and children; including infants or an adult medicinal dose for each every two hours the year round. Which is suf ficient, of course, to put an end to the children at once, and to keep the adult population, who are not habituated to the drug, in a state of perpetual somnolence from one ear's end to another. I Reduced Rates. The New York and Eric Kail-Hoad have reduced the rates of transportation on all kinds of goods, boots, shoes, hats and caps between New York andGincincinattitoSl 20por lOOlbs; on hardware, tea and all kinds of groce ries toSl per lOOlbs.; on all kinds of dry goods to Cleveland, Sandusky, Toledo and Detroit to 81 per 100 lbs.; to Chica go, on dry goods, 1 30 per 100 lbs. "In March last, three men(?) in the city of Springfield, Il linois, agreed together to drink themselves to death. The Kegister of that place, says the first died in April, the second in May. The survivor, on the happening of the last event, showed signs of breaking the contract, and kept sober two or three days afterwards; but honor revived, and he died in the month of June. This is literally true." Crops in New York. The wheat crop ofJSiew lork. it is said, is all secured, and it turns out well, the yield has been good. Of rye but little has been planted, out it lias grown well; oats turn out pret ty well, a great amount was planted ; In dian corn has not yielded well, but a very large area is covered with it; potatoes a- buiidant and good; hay and grass, two- mirds crop only ; fruit scarce. Possessing great virtues in the rec lification of diseases of the Liver and lesser glands, exercising the most searching pow ers in weakness and affections of the diges tive organs, they are withal, safe, certain and pleasant. llcad and be Convinced. From the Boston Bee. The editor said, Dec. 22nd-)r Iloojland's celebrated German Bitters for the cure of Li ver complaint, jaundice, dyspepsia, chronic or nervous debility, is deservedly one of the most popular medicines of the day. These Bitters have been used by thousands, and a Iriend-at our elbow says he has himself re ceived an etfectual and permanent cure of Liver complaint from the use of this remedy. We are convinced that, in the use of these Bitters, the patient constantly gains strength and vigor a fact worthy of great considera tion. They are pleasant in tasie and smell and can be used by persons with the most delicate stomachs with safety, under any cir cumstances. We are speaking from experi ence, and to the a filleted we advise their use. 'Scott's Weekly,' one of the best Liter ary papers published, said, Aug. 25 'Dr. Iloojland's German Bitters, manufac tured by Dr. Jackson, are now recommended by some of the most prominent members of the faculty as an article of much efficacy in cases of lemale weakness. As such is the case, we would advise all mothers to obtain a bottle, and thus save themselves much sick ness. Persons of debilitated constitutions will find these Bitters advantageous to their health, as we know from experience the sal utary effect they have upon week systems." More Evidence. The Hon. C. D. Hineline, Mayor of the City of Camden, N. J.,says: ' Hoojland's German Bitters. We have seen many flattering notices of this medicine, and the source from which they came induced us to make inquiry respecting its merits. From inquiry we were persuaded to use it, and must say we found it specific in its ac tion upon disease of the liver and digestive organs, and the powerful influence it exerts upon nervous prostration is really surpiising. It calms and strengthens the nerves, bring ing them into a state of repose, making sleep refreshing. "If this medidine was more generally used we are satisned there would be less sick ness, as from the stomach, livei, and nervous system the great majority of real and imagi nary diseases emanate. Have them in a healthy condition, and you can bid defiance to epidemics generally. This extraordinary medicine we would advise our friends who are at all indisposed, to give a trial it will recommend itself. It should, in fact, be in every family. No other medicine can pro duce such evidences of merit." Evidence upon evidence has been receiv ed (like the foregoing) from all sections of the Union, the last threeyears, and thestrong est testimony in its favor, is, that there is more ol it used in the practice of the regulur Physicians of Philadelphia, than all other nostrums conbined, a fact that can eaisily be established, and fully proving that a scien tific preperation will meet with their quiet approval when presented even in this form. That this medicine will cure Liver Com plaint and Dyspepsia, no one can doubt after using it as directed. It acts specifically up on the stomach and liver; it is preferable to calomel in all bilious diseases the effect is immediate. They can be administered lo ent at any time. Look well lo the tnarhs of the genuine. They have the written signature of C. M. JACKSON upon the wiapper, and his name blown in the bottle, without tohich they are spurious.
