"THE BIRTH PLACE OF ST. PATRICK 1S a DISPUTED POINT." Some asserting that he was a Frenchman, others that he was a sturdy Englishman, while the majority belive that ,e was a native of the Emerald Isle All are e .qually confident in the expression of their opin lonS. But the place of his birth is a matter of ve 7y little consequence, for all are willing to allow uhat " St. Patrick was a gentleman, and born of decent people." He certainly was a great man, forhe drove the toads and snakes out of Ireland, and it is said that they stay " drove out" up to this present day. He has been a benefactor to that part of the world. We have no St Patrick's here, but we have equally as great men, and among the number the name of Dr. Sherman will be remem bered by posterity with gratitude. His Worm Lozenges banishes the worms at once, and in place 0f the sickly countenance, gives the ruddy glow of health. His Cough Lozenges allay the irritation of a dry and hacking cough, gives quiet slumbers i .to those whose rest is disturbed, promote a free and easy expectoration, put a stop to the raisins ! of blood, and in a very short space of time restore! to perfect health. His Camphor Lozenges cure ! palpitations of the Heart, Headache, and Nervous Affections, raise the spirits of the depressed, and gcnei ally invigorate the system.- All Dr. Sher man's Lozenges are " tip-top" articles ; they are what they profess to be Specifics. His Poor Man's Plaster has obtained a reputation for cures performed in Rheumatism and Weak Backs, Pains in the Chest and Side, unequalled by any other preparation of the day. One million annually, will not supply the demand. Dr. Ss preparations have now been five years before the public, they have performed wonders in the way of cures, and hare never been known to produce the least inju rv, or to be productive of bad consequences. We have experienced their good effects, and can con--.cientiously recommend them. A fresh supply of the above valuable medicines jast received, and for sale at the Republican Of fice. The publishers announce that Dr. Latdner hav ing brought to a close his public Lectures in this country, they have availed themselves of the op portunity thus presented to induce him to prepare for publication a complete and authentic editio'n of these Discourses. The general interest which lor the last four years tbey have excited in ever' part of this country is universally felt and acknowl edged. Probably no public lecturer ever contin ued for the same length of time to collect around him so numerous audiences. Nor has there been any exception to this favorable impression. Visit after visit has been made to all the chief cities, and on eveiy succeeding occasion audiences a mounting to thousands have assembled to hear again and again these lessons of useful knowledge. The same simplicity of language, perspicuity of reasoning, and felicity of illustration, which ren dered the oral discourses so universally accepta ble will be preserved in the published report, which will indeed be, as nearly as possible, identical with the Lectures as they were delivered. The publishers feel that in the volume now pro posed they will present to the American public a most agreeable offering, and an interesting and useful miscellany of general information, which will also afford that large class of persons who have attended the Lectures, an agreeable means of reviving the impressions from which they have already derived so much profit and pleasure. The subjects which will be included will em brace a variety of topics in the Astronomical and Physical Sciences, and in their application to the arts of life. Among these the following may be mentioned : The Plurality of Worlds; The Sun; The Moon ; The Planets; The Comets: The Solar System; The Atmosphere; Popular Fallacies; Artificial Il lumination; Light; Sound; Electricity; Galvanism; The Bridge Water Lecture; Lunar Influences; Weather Almanacs; Babbage's Calculating Ma chinery; Electric and Magnetic Telegraphs; The Telescope and Microscope; Galileo; Copernicus; Lavoisier; ISewton; Ihe btellar Universe; Ihe Power of Steam; Steam Navigation; Aurora Bore- alis; Water Spouts; Thunder and Lightning; The ory of Dew; Heat; The Barometer; The Thermom eter; &c &c. The work will appear in numbers, or parts, will be well printed on good type, and copiously illus-! trated with engravings on wood. It will be com pleted in ten or twelve numbers, and the entire volnme will be published within six months. I he price will be 25 cents for each number. Any person wishing to procure this valuable work may apply to our agents, or to any of the Booksellers or Country Merchants in any part of the United States.
