HOW NOAH 60'1' HIS -NAME.
Alter the ark had been out about two' weeks,.
the wile of the_captain began 'to get tired and
restless, and anxious to be once 'more on dry
land. Ilencephe tell into the 'habit of every
now and then calling out to her hisband, and
it:igniting if there, was any signs of 'Clearing
up, etc., and as he always answered "No," she
would in despair add "Al I" and 'BO it went
from hour to hour and day to day.
One night the wind came out from the north
es4 an made things very lively onboard. The
fib cletvilines were all parted ; the topsail bin
nacle was carried away and them* *sheet
blewn into piecs no larger pan gVe-ce4t hand
kachiefs..., Of course the "old man" was kept,
busy and was not in the best ot humor. lie
bad just bailed the lookout and asked if he
bad seen anything of "Ay rat," and received,
for an answer "Nay rat, sir l"—had just order-,
ed Shem, who was steering, to "keep her off
two points," Wnen Ham came on' board and.
reported that the largest elephant . .had broken
loose, and insisted on taking his trunk into the
camel's department, who in turn. had got their
backs up about the inter View. Die • various:_
beasts' had taken sidesin.the quarrel, and there
was a grand row generally. Just as the ele
phant had been persuaded to go back 'to his own
room, and had, checked his trunk b. order to
pacify him, there came a voice, "Any signs of
clearing up,dear ?" It was raining then ,literally
in sheets. To the inquiry was given the usual
reply, and to the reply was added the usual
"Ab," only in a sadder tone than usual.
It was a little 'More than the old man could
stand, and he yelled out, "No," "Ah," •"No,"
!" it is nothing but, "No," Ali 1" all day'
long. "You had better call me '.Noah,' and be
done with it 1" and he went below to splice the
main brace, which had , parted. And so it was
that the Captain of the ; first .greilt ship came
to be called "Noah."
' The study of the origin of, names is one ot
great interest, and it is rather remarkable.that
so little .attentention has been paid to it. Ll-
mitsC any name can be traced to its probable
origin. Thus "Smashpiper," the smasher of
piper, or "Tugmutton," he who was celebrated
as a tugger of mutton. Why not appoint a
committee to ascertain the origin of all names?
It would be as useful as many other researches.

"If there Is a spirit 'hi the room, it `will signi

"Shall I hear from you to morrow ?"
Very loud raps in the direction of the door.
"Shall I ever see you ?"
Then rays came from outside the door. He
waited long for an answer to his last question,
none came. The spirit had gone ; 811 d after
