IN Mintonrem.—When heroed and states
men—the rulers of - a land—or those who are
great in Literature, in Art,or Philanthropy die,
they are buried with pomp, and a nation puts
` on, for a day, the outward \ semblances of grief
and mourning. A stranger , pissing thro . ugh
;" - "our streets on Thursday last, might have paus
ed to ask. "What mighty man has deputed ?"
He would have seen an entire community bow
ed with sorrow, assembled? to , pay the hist sad
tribute and esteem to one who had - gone from
among them. • The closed stores and shops, the
tolling knell. thadrooping weeds, the long pro
cession, moving slowly and sadly , to the band's
funeral dirge, all the outward tokens that the
mind associates with mourning for the great
ones of earth was there, and he who knows not
the cause might well ask "What hero, what
statesman has fallew ?"
But he to whose memory we paid these trib
utes never flooded e. land with blood; nor. filled
it with widows and orphans •to gain a hero's
name. His voice 4was never heard in legisla
tive halls. He was little known sbeyond his
own town and his oivn-)circle of friends. A
young maxi earning his bread by honest toil, a
humble clerk without wealtb—his only nobili-
ty of descent, integrity and \ honbr—he had by
his true and blaweless life earned the tribute'
thus paid his memory by those who him
best. And so we mourned not outwardly In
stereotyped phrase, as we mourn rulers and'
heroes.t, Our grief was real, its outward show
ing a heartfelt testimony to the worth of the \
departed. . .
/ Chauncey Curtis Gilbert, son of Chas. S.
Gilbert, of Great Bend, was , born in Dimock,
Susqnehanna County, June 27, 1850. - At the -
age of three years he removed with his parents
to Great Bend, which has since been his borne.
Of his character and de position naught but
good can be affirmed. die was quiet and re
served with strangers, but never I•epellent in
manner. Be chose but few intimate associates
to whom he revealed himself fully, yet his cir
cle of friends' embraced all who ) made hii ac
qnaintane,e for he was kind \ and courteous to
all. He was a man d i strict morality of un
blemished probity i.nd honor—his, word in the
community 'a bond. With nothing tame nor
fawning in his nature—prompt to assert his
own dignity, and never yielding a • point et
right to curry favor—hci was yet without ene
mies, fur he wronged none. As a business
man his priimis was rich, for he possessed"ll
the qualities to insure success—sound judg
ment, ready tact, and unflagging industry. s
As a son, be was affectionate, ever obedient.l
paying his parents the same difference and hon
or as a num, that he had accorded as a child.
Making his father's' house his home, tee filial
tie had never bees weakened by separation,
and its sudden, rending \ by death, bows the be
reaved ones low in / the dust. Wel l who knew
him can sympathize with' them for we . know
Low great is their loss:
The estimation in which be was held by his
tonsnien was shown in the political canvass
last year, .when he wag the Demdcratie candi
date for the office of, Rgist,i , n. and Recorder.—
Although his opponent was a worthy Republi
can and a veteran soldier-4ormerly a respect
ed citizen of Great Bend—" Curt" received all
but ten of thabillots ,cast \ for that o ffi ce in the
borough, and' was defeated by less than one
bundred votes in the county. •
His illness was long and painful—a natural
ly strong constitution, utisupped by excesses
maintaining the Unequal combat with disease,
)(mg alter mutual seirce and hope had, been
exhausted,. Dn the morning of Tuesday; Oct.
17th, death came, and a pall of gloom settled
up,,n the commuuity,as the talling• bell !naught

WE TARE .pleasure inocalling the attention of
our readers to the fact that the popular Dry
Goods house of C. F. Bissox & Co., Bingham
ton, are now receiving an unusually large and
complete assortment of new spring goods; Not
withstanding the cry of "bard times," this
house informs us that their trade is larger than
at any former season. This is easily accounted
for by the fact that they always offer the most
reliable goods at the some, prices that many
houses sell a very inferiior grade. All the nov
elties of the season, both of foreign and do
mestic manuftrzture, may "now be found upon
their shelves, and a visit to their store, will con.:
yince anyone that that is the place to trade.
