IN Mintonrem.—When heroed and states men—the rulers of - a land—or those who are great in Literature, in Art,or Philanthropy die, they are buried with pomp, and a nation puts ` on, for a day, the outward \ semblances of grief and mourning. A stranger , pissing thro . ugh ;" - "our streets on Thursday last, might have paus ed to ask. "What mighty man has deputed ?" He would have seen an entire community bow ed with sorrow, assembled? to , pay the hist sad tribute and esteem to one who had - gone from among them. • The closed stores and shops, the tolling knell. thadrooping weeds, the long pro cession, moving slowly and sadly , to the band's funeral dirge, all the outward tokens that the mind associates with mourning for the great ones of earth was there, and he who knows not the cause might well ask "What hero, what statesman has fallew ?" But he to whose memory we paid these trib utes never flooded e. land with blood; nor. filled it with widows and orphans •to gain a hero's name. His voice 4was never heard in legisla tive halls. He was little known sbeyond his own town and his oivn-)circle of friends. A young maxi earning his bread by honest toil, a humble clerk without wealtb—his only nobili- ty of descent, integrity and \ honbr—he had by his true and blaweless life earned the tribute' thus paid his memory by those who him best. And so we mourned not outwardly In stereotyped phrase, as we mourn rulers and' heroes.t, Our grief was real, its outward show ing a heartfelt testimony to the worth of the \ departed. . . / Chauncey Curtis Gilbert, son of Chas. As a business man his priimis was rich, for he possessed"ll the qualities to insure success—sound judg ment, ready tact, and unflagging industry. s As a son, be was affectionate, ever obedient.l paying his parents the same difference and hon or as a num, that he had accorded as a child.
