Singular Accident The Blooiatield Democrat of May 1G, records a singular ne-cident as follows: The foot log at Coiiip's crossing, in Juniata township, broke last Sunday with several folks upon it who were going home from Wal nut drove church, Luckily only one end of the log went down, fall ing nbout 1-3 feet. J. L. Hutchison, leading his little boy, was foremost nuu happened to be only about a step from where it broke and cocse piently got tha hardest fall alight ing on stones and was immersed in water. A da -ghter of D. S. Barrack aud a little daughter of Austin Dimm also fell the whole distance, into about two or three feet of water, but ihey escaped uninjured. J. L. Hutchison had one hip bruised and foot sprained. The boy complained that his back was hurt. Mr. T. C Campbell was thero with hoise and cart and kindly gave it to haul the crippled home. Mrs Dimm was al so on the log that broke, but so fin back that the was not jolted cff. Several ladies ami children were back yet aud also Mr. Dimm who was carrying a smaller child. When ho saw his daughter fall he sat tho child elown end ra"h into the creek to rescti; tho girl that vrm lying under two or three feet of water- The liarrick girl alighted oq her feet aud was not hurt, but s-eared and drench ed. It caused a good deal of excite ment. The log was . rotten and went down with a sudden crath. The same paper of the same date records two singular firus thus: On last Wednesday about 3 o'clock Mr. Sjlomon Bower of Jackson Twp., was sitting ou his porch. Ho told bis son's wife, .Vrs. Annie Bower, that he smolled smoke. Ou going -around the huse she discovered that the pantry attached to the back part of the house was all ablaze. B3- tho heroic efforts of the women and Mr. David Stambaugh who saw the smoke, the fire was extinguished. Had tho Viiiiui building not been a stone struc ture the entiro buil ling would havo been consumed. The lire originated from a spark from the flue of tho kite-hen attached, cccupicd bv Mr. Clark Bower. On last Thursday as Mrs. Darnel Sheaffor was baking aud doing some ironing, she discovered that a final ket-ba.-ke-t that was hanging ou a hook near the upper coruer of the window about Hi f. et from the stove, and on fire and burning rapidly. Sue ran out to the well for water and called for belp. When they got the fire ex tinguished it had burned one-half of the basket and about one-half of the window blind oft the window. A large coal-oil can with oil was stand ing on the window. By daylight it had fallen and the peoole begin to feel more cheerful. The dam of Samuel Ard's mill in Milford township, washed out on S.mday afternoon The water was within four feet of the river bridgo at this place. Great concern was expressed for tho bridges. Had they gone away they could not have been replaced by the county for tho limit of indebtedness on a fictitiously high valuation has already been reached. The public mind in this town was so wrought up by the flood that tho attendance at church on Sabbath eveniug was smJ!. The-re were 2.3 present at preaching in the Presbyterian church, 29 in the Meth odist church, and services were en tirely dispensed with by tha Lutheran.-,. People gathered nt the river, aad all 1 iuds of rumors and reports floated about among them as that much flood gossip to whet their car iosity and anxiety. If the county bridges had teeth, it would be said of them "they escaped by the skiu of their teeth." Old Port Royal bridge had four f?et in it, dead back water from tho river. The Aunieu bridge at McCulioch's Mills across Licking Creek had 3 feet of wa ter in it, and the Groninger bridge across Tuscarora ereek withstood a regular bo aibardmen t of logs and gen eral drift. Some of the logs shot clean 'hrough it. The most of them were driven by the current under tha bridge. The Port Royal bridgo is standing, brt canal bridgo connection v.iththis S'de of the river is gone. Mex ico and Thompsontown bridges are ail right. A small county bridg3 at Stambaugb's acrix-s tho pike iu Fer managh township was swept away. In the west end of the cot-jty a num ber of township bridges wett with the flood. The rains were more fre quent in that part of tho country, with shorter intervals than iu the middle and east end of the county. There was a washout of the T." V. R. It. at Waterford and Bealctown.
