About half past two on Sunday morning, people in the Murry House were awakened by a thumping noise The same noise awakened the fam ily of Merchant Gilson, Dr. Wm. Banks, and Editor Bonsall. With the instinct of a newspaper man the editor sprang out of bed and hoisted the window to lsarn, "what's the matter," but he was a second too late to see the thief who made the noise, He heard the man run by his win dow and around the corner of Rod ger's drug store and down the alley toward Water street. Upon investi gation it turned out that the noise was occasioned by an effort to break open tbo front door of McClintic's hardware store. Two of the locks on the deor were broken and the door was considerably sprung Just how the thing was done is a matter of conjecture by all who have looked on the work of the thieves. R. K. B'irge, a citizeu of East Waterford, aged about 35 years, had some heated words on the street with an other citizen of the place. Mrs. Burre, whose maiden name was Miss Ida Crist, of New Port, Perry county, and to whom he was married only about 3 months sines, heard her husband, and opened a window and ask Vim to come in. He was in a fnrioni passion, the kind of a passion that it is said he freqnently worked himself into. He imme diately began ahueing his wife, and threw the furniture about the room and broke the eook stove and wonnd np his mad career i his home by j striking his wife on te head with a j chair. She fell senseless to the floor, j Then for the first time in his mad ; freak be realized what he had dnne ! He called his wife by name, Ida! Iks! , but Ida was to all appearanee dead j and could give no response. He rush-j ed from the hoase, like a crazy being or a man frenzied with liquor, and i started for his grocery store nearby. : When he came out of hi house he j was heard to exclaim that settles it. He was born in Tusearora valley, and was known to the people as a man with a bad tem per and his mother in her younger days was sent to the asylum for the cure of mental ai'mnnt, and it is also said that on the day that he commit ted the awful tragedy he had secured some liquor, it having been stt to him from Port Royal. He spent some years in tho west, and npon his return, abont two years ago stsrted in the grocery store business- With the taint of insanity, and a bad tem per, and a fondness for intcxicating di ink he was dangerously violent at times, but no one thought him cap able of the awful frenzey that re sulted in the striking down of his wife and the taking of his own life.
