SENTINEL & REPUBLICAN MI2FLLNT0WN. WED3ESDAT, FEB. 10. 1892. B. F. SCHWEIER kbitok aid raoramoa. Honest Money. The gold bugs say, there is noth ing in a stamp, a itamp or law im parts no Talu9 to thirig, commodity, or coin, and in the next breath they want to legislate and stamp gold as tie only coin in which to redeem bonded indebtedness, and the Beit utterance is to characterize paper money as honest money, when in point of fact, paper has no money value except what is staraped on it. Two pieces of blank government bond paper are worth so small a part of a cent that it requires quite a calculation to determine how much hey are worth. The one may be stamped five hundred dollars, the other is stamped one thousand dol lars, and pass for those respective amounts. The stamp on the bonds would not make the valulees paper valuable if the paper did not contain a promise to redtMii the paper or bond in ceiu, gold or silver. The whole object of the gold bugs is to get ri l of silver so that the bonded indebtedness s'aall La made payable in gold, and that would increase the the price of gold for it would then be the only coin in which paper could bs redeemed. The silver men are fighting to place silver coin where it was previous to 1873, name ly, to place it as an equal in the ro domption of paper obligations of government, "When that has been done the difference in the price be tween gold and silver, as the gold bug cnll it will disappear. The people of of the United States want honest money, and plaufy of it and the way to secure that prosperous end is to allow no difference in legisla tion between gold and silver but make the paper obligations redeem able in coin gold or silver. That would settlo the gold and silver question. Tae w York Press, says that un der the protective tariff policy the United States has iron furnaces and iron mills and steel mills at which wo can turn out armament, offensive and defensive, in case of war, with speed and efficiency unsurp.iesad by any nation on the globe. The Demo cratic free trade policy would leave us stripped ef all these furnaces and mills and helpless to protect our. selves. Judge Fukst, of Centre county, in granting naturalisation papers to an Englishman on Thursday stated that hereafUr before he would naluialize foreigners he would require them to read the constitutiens of Pennsylva nia and the United States. Th billion Congress expenses is the outsrrowth of the democratic rebel three billion w ar. Everybody seems to be pleased over the close of the trouble with Chili excepting Great Britain. Political roluts. Mr. Cleveland probably knows when he has had enough, and that is the reason he is not in the race for the Presidency. Toledo Blade. Philadelphia has instructed nation al delegates for Blaiue, also for Cleve laud- Aud now the question is, how much of a Jonah is the Quaker City, anyway t Cleveland Leader. The Mugwamps ou their knees to the i ammany tiger, begging him to pleasti not chew up Mr. Cleveland, maLi! one of the curious phases of American politics that this cold win ter is giving uc. Baliimsre American, David B. Hill is maligned been use he cannot be beaten. Chicag Her ald. Possibly he cannot be beaten be fore a Democratic convention. Bat wait until the people get a whack at him, and he wen't know whether he is afoot or on horse back. He can not play the New York game on the United States. Chicago Jnter-Ucean J. he few Cleveland men wuo are left eay that their favorite could be elected without New Yerk. The significant part of this assertion is the admission of his friends that he could net carry that State. In this disability, however, he is in no worse plight than is Hill. Neither of these iucd, under existing conditions cculd carry New Tor, and this is the chief reason why their party will not nomiuate either. St. Louis Giobe Demotrat. Born ia a Street Car. New York, Feb. 4. The conduc tor of car No. 131, of the grand Street Line, received bat one fare from Mrs. Minnie Spingle, of 162 llenroe street, whea she got on his car, at 9 10 o'clock this morning, and only one fare got on. But five minutes later, when the blushing and very much agitated conductor rang the bell for a stopping at liroadway, two passengers were assisted from the car and were taken a little later to St. Vincent's Hospital. Certainly child never selected a more novel place or occasion for making its debut iu the world than Baby Spingle, and no case is on rec ord of a street car conductor having his passenger list enlarged in this fashion, but neither babe nor moth er seems any the worse for the ex perience. Some congressman proposes to admit all the soldiers against rebell ion free to the Chicago Columbian exhibition next year. It is a wonder the congressman did not go farther and propose to hotel and keep the old soldiers free of co6t in Chicago, during the time of the visit to the 8 how. Harriet E.
