Allison's bar j, near AUensville, on Tuesdav: The lightning struck the gable of the west end of the barn, the fluid pass ing down on the insids and also on the outride of the 6tone work (the barn being a stone structure), shattering the wall somewhat as well as the windows, and into the ground. The hay in the rrrw ignited, and the ' roof of the wajon-shed on the out- side soon caught fire from the ltames b'azing out through a window. Mr. AUisoii, his sons, Harry and Willie, and Clair Grove, were in the barn at the time unloading wheat, and Mr. iAilions tw little gnls bail just I of Juniata cnanty tbe name of Win. B. Mc i lake 11 some water to the barn for ib ! Caban of Milford township as a candidate men to drink, were in the barn floor. None of the persons were hurt, but Willie had his hair ulightlv singed. Three of the horses which were hitched to the wagon were thrown to their kntms, and the other one was knocked down flat, and all badly frightened. The first effort made by those present was to get the horses out safuly, which was difficult to do owing to their being so badly frightened. A horse standing in the stable but a few feet from where the electric fluid passed into the ground seemed entirely unconscious of it. By this time, which was very short, however, the lire in the bay mow was burning considerably, but the hay being just sweating the fire did not get much bea.lwav. A determ ined effort to conquer the Humes w as made and it proved successful. A number of neighbors came very soon and succeeded, in smothering and quenching the flames. The baru is a large one. and contained besides hay, Ac, about 500 dozen sheaves of wheat. It w?.s purely a miraculous accomplishment !o subdue the flames and save the barn. A farmer near St. Louis has a nest of owls in bis barn ni;d therj keep it free fiom rats and mice. The birds Iht up provisions at night for the next day. The farmer marked the bodies of the mice he found by cutting off one foot with a pair of scissors. At night all the niNrked mice would be gone and tbe next morning there would be"a fresh supply.
