In each of these trials the jury re turned a verdict in lavor ot Johnson for sums ranging from $3,500 to $7,0fX, and each time the trial Judge set the verdict aside onaccount of alleged errors. The case was next taken lo Black Iiaak county in ltSt-3, on another change of venue and there tried A verdict or $5,000 was rendered bytne jury, ana juagemeni enter ed. From this, however an appeal wa taken to the Supreme Court, the decision reversed, and the case waa remanded back for trial in 1M. In lfp6 lhe case was once more tried in Black Uawk county, and again a decision was rendered in lavor of Johnston for $7, 000. This was again appealed to tbe Su preme Court, and onco more the verdict waa set aside and the case sent back for trial in lbb7. And now-the sixth trial ot the case will take place in Waterloo af ter fouiteen years of litigation. This litigation has been under the con sideration of thirty Orand Jurors and eighty- four petit juror ; it baa been presented to nine different trial judges, and has twice j day ot sale ; thirty per cent, on day ol con been before the Supremo Court, five Judges , Drmlion ' ' y Court ; thirty per . , . . . . anting upon the bench each time. A number of farmers engaged in the suits have become hopeless ly ruined, but still Johnson cornea smiling ly before the courts, begins his suits, and readily paya lor them, though be ia fast sinking into into insolvency, and ia already an elderly man. Children of various ages who testified when the litigation first began, now lead into court their own children, who are nearlr aa old as were their parents as the time they made their first bows to the courts. The farmers are growing old, their money has leaked away through the variona legal crevices, and fonnd its way into other hands; homes have been broken up, a community been made poorer in every way, and still tbe case ia dragged through the Udious channels of the law with bnt little more chance of a settlement that there wa fourteen years ago.
