The Court last week crranted whole BfJe liquor license, to sell, as distillers in quantities of not less than a gallon. to John 1L Topper, It. I a reviewing tbe last two years' work of oar schools, wo believe there has been a general advancement in many respects and with the spirit of improvement prevailing with teachers, directors aad patrons, things look hopeful for the future. Three new houses have been built, six supplied with patent furniture, sixteen with dictionaries, four with elate blackboard with outline maps. Many new building are still badly needed. A Dum ber of the old building are really unfit for use, some of tbem being too small, badly heated and little or no means for ventilaj tion : this interfere verv ranch with tbe discipline and progress of the school. Tbe duty of providing suitable out -build ings is one roach neglected in many of car districts. A few bouses are without privies of any kind, and, in many other instance thev are abeolulelv unnt for use. Due re spect for the morals and health of the pa pits, and common decency should impel teachers and directors to give this matter their earnest and careful attention. In the past 2 years, four hundred and t wen ty five vis t were made to the schools la tbe county, in company with many of the di rector and citizen. In these visits, the aim has been to encourage good work on the part of teachers and pupils to supple ment unsatisfactory work by class drill and private conference with the teacher. While nut directly under my supervision, I tare carefully watched the work done ia the Soldiers' Orphan School at McAlitrvill, and have nothing but good words to speak in its bubatf. I know somewhat of the con dition ol the chiMr-tt of Juniata county, and, alio those ia this school, and I do not think that a happier, brigater lot of chil dren will be hard to Had. I regnt that I cannot report greater pn J gross in school ground and surrounding. Nowhere ia neglect more apparent. Arbor Day w obierved in a few localities ; dur ing the past two years about three hundred tree were planted in tbis connty. There i no good reason wby these should not re ceive the same care and attentien tbat is bratowed on other educational agenci, inasmuch as the advantages of suitable grennds and surrounding are many. Grounds should be enclosed with a neat fence and shads trees planted . We believe that both mind and heart are anected and greatly modified by external object. C'bil dren will imbibe pure and refined thought troiu tbeir surrounding aa well aa trom their teacher and hence the greatest effort should Iss made to render such surround ings the most endearing. Tbe teachers of tbe county, as a class, have exhibited aa enthusiasm worthv of tbeir profession.
