Charley Tannebaker broke through the
ice on the river while skating on New
Year dar. He w.s in water up to his arm
pits. It waa a cold dip and a big scare.

the woods one day during the holidays and

paid for at the rate of 10 cents per pound.
Th sabbath schoil entertainment in the
Lutheran church in Christinas eve was at
tended by miny people. The decorations
weie iiuite elaborate, and in first rate pro
portion. Pi veral daysago a team, owned by K. A.
Tennis, broke through the ice on the river,
at Thompsontown. Thre hours were spent
in getting the team to shore. The sled was
loaded with wheat.
The Nicaragua Canal treaty propoafs that

William Lewis, a promint-nt citizen ot
liuiitii.pdon, while taking an active part in
a revival meeting in the Methodist Church,
in the town just mentioned, was striek -n
with paralysis. Mr. Lewis was editor of
the Globe newspaper during a period of 2)
years.
Cn last Thursday evening the young folks
of this town and vicinity held a party at
natron's Hotel in JIcAlisterville. They
d arced i.ntid a late hour and all came away
pleaded both with the party the snpp.-r and
accommodations fu nished by Mr ar.d Mrs.
Susrron.

for blood relatives of Oliver Parry McKee
ban, who died in Spain without children.
He is said to have utit a large fortune. He
was born in Mitilin county atid had a broth
er who moved to Illinois, and a sitr who
went to Indiana.
Samuel Strayr, on account of fire, will
sell in the Graybill building, Mifflin, Pa.,
his entire ttck of Clothing, Hats, Ctos,
Boots, Shoes, and Notions, At Cost aid

wants to reduce his stock before rebuilding
at his old stand in Patterson.
An avelanche of snow and ice, came
dow n from the roof cd a house on Main
street the other day, while William Gun
senhonser was walking by, he dodged Ihe
snew slide and escaped without injury, ex
cepting, that bis hat had a hole cut into it
by the sharp edge of a cake of ice as it
slid by.
The Altoona Tribune remarks : It ia a
violatien on positive Biblical injunction to
feed tke drunken tramps who infest this
community. "If a man will not work neith
er shall he eat" ia a good doctrine and if
the people woild begin to carry it resolute
ly out there would be fewer loafers and
mora honest workers.
C. P. Taniiebaker, formerly a f tremin in
this office has connected himself with the
enterprise of slatting the Co ilporl Siftings,
a newspaper at Coalport, a now town, with
coal, timber, and railroad interests to bi:k
it. It is the only paper in that gro-ving
community, and as it is not started to brcsk
some one else it has the best wishes of many
people.

sioners were in on Monday aoi en
tered upon the discharge os tneir ortke with
Mr. Eaiton as President. A. J. Patterson
elected Attorney for the board, S. B- Lou
don clerk, and D. C. Louder Court House
janitor. T. U. Meminger the Prothonotary
was sworn in on Monday.
A few dayt ago Jennie Morrison aged
about 21 years died of typhoid fever at her
fathers's house in Lewistown.' Her father,
Joshna Morrison was married twice and by
the marriages became the father or 16 chil
dren all of whom he followed to the tomb
excepting two sons who are living in Mif
flin county. Mr. Morrison ia about 75 year
of age and is a vigorous man.
A communication, from Omaha, Neb.,
tinder date ot December 26, 1884, says.
Mr S. A. Harner, and Miss Jennie White,
were married at the residence of the bride's
father, in Omaha, on the date mentioned,
by tho Rev. Mr. Smith, of the same town.
About 200 guests were present and after a
delicious supper had bien partaken of, the
happy couple took a westward bound train
te pass their hony moon in San Francisco.
During the late Teachers' Institute held
in this place, State Superintendent Iligbee
declared one evening Iu a lecture tbat '-the
maximum of taxation has not been reached."
He carried the thought into his annual re
port to the Governor, which is evident from
the fact that be askes the Legislature to ap
propriate one million Iwo hundred and fifty
dollars for school purposes, this year. Uue
hundred and lifty thousand of which is to
go to the norma! schools.

One night, several weeks ago, a valuable
horse, owned by J. M. McDomdd, had Us
lelt hind leg broken above the pastern joii.t
by a kick from another horse owned by Mr.
McDonald. The next day the broken leg
was set, but the animal bad not yet be
come used to handling the broken limb,
and broke it at another place just above the
first break. The second break was set.
Since then the animal has exhibited an un
common amount of horse sense in handling
ihe broken leg,aud gets up and down quite
skiliiully wo three legs, aud is on a fair
way to a speedy recovery.
On Friday evening two robbers boardud
a passenger train on tho Baltimore and
Ceutral Railroad, within 60 miles of Phila
delphia, and with revolver in hand, robbed
passengers of money and watches to the
value ot $h., while the train ran from one
station to an other, a distance of Ihi-ee
miles. They got on the train at Rising
S mi and got off at Syliuir. The thieves
were caught in Cecil county, Maryland. If
railroad robberies become fretpent in the
eastern states, pacsengms will deem it ne
cessary to carry a shot gun or pistols when
they travel by rail.
A number of boys in this town are in the
habit of running to sleighs and sleds tbat
come to town lor the purpose of obtaining a
ride, and if not permitted to ride taey eel
np a cry agaiust the person sleighing and
sometimes throw snow balls and pieces of
ice after the person who his refused them
a ride. Such insolence on thj part ot the
boys is inexcusable. nd some day they
w ill get hold of a country m in who will have
taeni arrested and they aud their parents
sill have to aus-.vur betor a Justice of the
Peace for the assault. Parents who have
lll-umd children had better look to the hab
its of their '-youngsters."
1 wo boys, named Gloss, aged 2t and
16 years, were arraigned before Justice
John Patterson, at Perue Mills, on a charge
ot having burned North Point achool house
in Lack township, this county, on Sundiy
night. December 2S, 1884. The boys at
tended a Methodist meeting at R -ed's Gap,
and while on their way home stepped from
the road and fired the bin ding, in which
there had been no school since the previous
Friday. Tb Correspondence of the soles

at the school house, with other circumstan
ces led to theii arrest. The boys w.-rc
broitght to this place on Sunday night, Jan
uary 4, by officer Campbell, aud lodged in

John Milliken, of Spruce Hill township,
received a letter, threatening to serve him
as Enoch Beale was served if he docs not
move Neal Morgan from a ten int house on
the Milliken property. The letter h is c ius
ed a great deal of fjniet excitement in Tus
earora valley. Many citizens in the valley
are now beginning to believe that the nu
merous fires that have taken place the past
few yeats ware caused by spiteful, fiendish
people instead of by accid'nt as they for

set on fire by a revengeful person. There is

The Itinera! of Edmund S Doty, one of
ihe richest men in Junata county and the
oldest r.ative-born citizen of Miff.iiitown,
look place on the afternoon of December
27, 1884. He nuked among the ablest law
yers of the central part of the State. He
was a solicitor for the Pennsylvania Rail
road Company and an officer of the Union
Trust Cmnrany of Philadelphia. He was
of New England stock his father having
come lere from Connecticut. He leaves a
wire, eight sons and one daughter. Six of
the older sons can led his body to the Pres
bvterian graveyard where it was entombed
nt 3 o'cloek P. M. Previous to the time of
Ihe funeral Ihe bar of this and Mitilin coun
ty held a meeting in the otti'-e of the Reg
ister and Recorder and each member dcliv
ed a speech appropr iate to the occasion af
ter which they adjourned and attended the
lun.'ral in a body. Mr. Doty was b:rn on
the 22 day of Angnst 1815.

by the Woman's Missionary Society, of the
Mexico CT. P. Congregation, at their meet
ing on December 81st, 1884, on the sudden
and unexpected death of Miss Ida MaGill,
one ol our members :

Dear Sir. Old and young people of the vi
cinity of Thompsontown and Locust Run,
have been attending evening parties, sing
ing school, literary societies, and so forth.
The Christmas tree in the Lutheran church
at Thompsontown waa a grand one, the
church building was crowded.
Ou the 2iith day of December, the neigh
borhood waa excited over tho ruuaway ol I
2 horses hitched to a sled oaned by B. S.
Graybill. Mr. Graybill bad bjeu to town
and on his way home be stopped at 111 e
house of his father, hitched the team aud
went iu to see bis parents, lie bad a 4 year
old son with him, unknown to either parent,
or grand parent, the 4 year old boy lelt the
house, and weut out to the sled, mounted it,
aud then a racket took place among the hor
ses, they broke the bitching strap and ran
away taking the boy with them on the sled.
They ran as far as t Solomtn Maub.'ck's
place where thev were stopped. Nothing
was broken, the boy wat all right and cry
ing lustily a if bsdly searei. A niimoer of
horsemen turned eut and rode after the
runaway team.
