Ex-Attorney General George Lear,
died at Doyiestown, last Friday, from
pleurisy, aged G7 years He was self
made. He worked on a farm, taught
school, clerked in a store, till he was 27
years of age and then began the study
of law, and became a successful lawyer.
He was a strong public speaker, and
those who knew Li in best say tbat he
was an honest man.

At Meyersdale, Somerset county, the
Sunday dragged itself along too slowly
for four oity drummers, and to pass the
time more hurriedly tbey engaged at a
game of ball playing, which so shocked
tbe religious sentiment of the eommun
ity that the young men were arrested for
having violated the Sunday laws. Tbey
were each fined $10, and of oourse they
paid the cost of the suit.
Great Excitement.
Yeakly and Son have created an ex
citement in local nercbantile circles by
tbe statement tbat tbey are selling off
their large stock of store goods, and
large stock of shoes, at cost, and below
cost, with the object of retiring from
business. Now is tbe time to secure
bargains by calling at the Palace where
tbey are doing business.
On last Friday afternoon- while a
thunder storm was passing over Tna-
carora township, the lightning struck
and killed live head of cattle owned
by Wilson Imes. Tbe animals were
nnder a tree in a field when killed.
A house owned by James Hull was
struok and badly uamnged. A wagon
shed owned by Isaac Book was also
struck by lightning.

last Fridav afternoon but were not
