A Mother's Lav. A few years ago, a small packet, freighted with human life, Bailed from one of the New England ports, on her rosace to the East The day of her de parture was one of the loveliest in the pleasant month ' of September. Not a speck was visible on the clear blue face of the illimitable sky, and only a great udolating breeze disturbed the calm ness of the sleeping ocean. Everyone on board anticipated a speedy and prosper ous vovage, and was happy. I gazed upon her admirable proportions, as she skimmed along, sitting like a swan on the glassy surface of the waters, for I had just bidden adieu to an honored friend, who was one of her joyous com pany. But this placid sea, and these soft, bland winds were not long to continue. As the sun was declining in the west, a dark cloud became dimly perceptible on the verge of the distant horizon. It was espied with deep and fearful interest by mauv an anxious eye, as it gradualJy f cended and expanded itself, like a shroud, over the western segment of the azure, arched sky. A violent rustling immedi ately arose in the surrounding air, the signal of a storm in the upper re gions of the atmosphere, which was only audible below. The ocean still contin ued comparatively undisturbed, but this very tranquility, so manifest and pecu liar, when contrasted with the extreme violence that was raging afar, was much more awful than if its furious waves had rolled in masses to the sky, and threat ened to engulf them all in its yawning chasms. But xii the white foam that was scarcely Tisible.awhile since, on the crests of the dLstant billows, legan to approach nearer and yet nearer, till every wave flashed with the hoary spray. The vivid lightning was more and more rapidly overtaken by the peals of thun der, that followed with its wake. Until, on a sudden, an intensely lrilliant "bolt of living fire" struck down into the hiss ing deep.and its sparkling Warns as they touched the surface, darted forth mritim rable sparks, resembling a shower of rockets. This appeared to lie the ap pointed precursor of the swift-winged tempest For, in an instant, every wind that blows seemed to have been released from the mountain caves of JEolua. And all at once, the hurricane, the light nings and the rains, aided in their work of ruin by the roaring bilows of the stormy Atlantic, combined in expending their fury upon the luckless vessel. One of those desperate squalls, that but rare ly occur, was sweeping with the bosom destruction from shore to shore. On board that ill-starred vessel was a widowed mother and her only son. He was a bright and beautiful child about four years of age. She was just in her weeds, young, amible and attractive.but with a heart overshadowed with fresh grief. As danger thickened around them this mother forgot herself in her bitter anxiety for her darling boy. She seized him in her arms, and pressed him with a convulsive effort to her Inborn. She hur ried with him from cabin to deck, and from deck to cabin, lx-seecliing with piteous tones and a breaking heart, that her child at least might be rescued. And then she would imprint her burning kisses on his dimpled cheeks, and pray in agony to "Him who holdeth the winds in his grasp and the waters in the hol low of his hand," for snocor and support But, alns ! no aid could reach her in this season of her dreadfid peril. She wept and wailed and prayed in vain. For a blast of the tempest more cruel than the rest, capsized the frail bark, and the wide waste of the angry sea whelmed them lioth in one common death. In a few days subsequent to this sad catastrophe, an effort was made by the friends of those who had perished to re cover fur interment the remains of the dead. There is a principle incorporated in our very nature which make us revolt at the thought of taking up of taking up our last altode in the coral caves of the ocean, with only the hoarse moaning of the boisterous billows for our requiem. We love a calm and quiet spot of earth, whither those who survive us may resort, to drop a tear upon the green sod that covers us, and become familiar with the king of terrors. Hence the strong de sire we entertain to give our relatives a decent burial. After a long and diligent search the bodies of some, who had been the victims of this sea-storm, were re covered, and among others, the relics of this mother and her son. They were all brought to the town iu which I then re sided, and after being suitably prepared, were exposed to the inspection of such persons as might wish to see them. Stimulated by a natural curiosity, I hur- i ried on with the crowd to take a farewell look of the lKxlies before they were com mitted to the darkness and the damp ness of the "narrow house." And judge kind reader ! if you can, of the power and poignancy of my feelings, when, in the pallid group, I beheld that fond mother, with her lovely boy, pressed so strongly to her pulseless bosom, that no ordinary exertion could unloose the hold ! She remembered and loved that child as fresldy as ever, until the last park of life was extinguished. Nay, more ! the bitterest pangs of dissolution added intensity to maternal affection, and enabled her, in her expiring moments, to clasp her "first lmra," with such sup erhuman energy, in her arms, that could not dissolve the embrace. It was a most affect iu j spectacle to see that charming boy nestled to his parent's breast, as if he were sleeping sweetly there, and would soon awake. But, ah ! that sleep will never be broken till the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall awake. In the same coffin were they both in closed, and in the same grave were their lifeless bodies deposited. I turned from the grave as the dry clods began to rattle on the coffin. Impressed with a more solemn conviction than ever before of the depth and intensity of a mother's love. The white saJiDe substance that ''comes out" upon .irit k walls, and which has been a source of annoyance to a great many, may be remedied. In reply to a query on the subject we say : The ' sa tpetrioir'' of brickwork can generally be prevented by adding oil to tbe mortar, at the rate of a gallon to a cask o' lime. If cement is used in the motnar, an additional gallon of oil must be allowed for each cask of cement Linseed oil is generally employed, but any kind of which does not con'ain salt will answer. The inr irtalion, once formed, can be removed with hot water, or by tbe muriatic acid eenrial.y used for cleaning down brickwork, but it will reappear again by exudation from the interior of the wall, and usually leaves a permanent black or brown stain. MniL' a. n a nr ftvunD muck ol good quality, three feet deep, is actually worth $23,000. 2o doubt such a statement is turpi uing. So was tbe statement 01 in. Lawes, of England, tnai a ton 01 urau icu to cows return more than it cost in ma nure. The best muck, free from sand, contains two per cent or forty pounds of nitrocen hi a ton. Nitrogen is wortn in the market twenty-five cents per pound, so that a ton of swamp muck is worth $30 for the nitrogen in it All that is needed is to work up the muck, so as to make the nitrogen available. An acre of swamp muck three feet deep contains 2.500 tons and would require eight montns to ora out at ten loads a day. Few persona real ize tbe value of the fertilizing element of common waste matters which he under their feet and the innumerable tons of matter that may be available for fertilizing purposes, or that many of the idle and ne glected materials represent a vast amount of wealth But it must be remembered that all swamp muck cannot be classed as of good quality some of it is next door to worthless. JUsAOiMtNT or Oxix The ox should be as Utile abused by threats t nd wbiping as by stinted feed and overtasked labor. Loud and repealed hallooing, or the severe use of the lash, is as impolitic as it is cruel and disgraceful. We never witness this barbarity without wishing tbe brutes could change places, long enough, at least to teach the biped that humanity by his own sufferings which his reason and sensibility have failed to inspire. Clear and intelli gible, yet low and gentle words, are neces sary to guide the well-trained, spirited ox. Tbe stick or whip is needed rather to indi cate the precise movement desired than as a stimulant or means of punishment The ox understands a moderate tone more per fectly than a boisterous one, for all sounds become indistinct as they increase. Ewes in Iamb should, as far as practi cable, be fed and sheltered separately from the non-breeding animals, as the crowding and more rapid movements of tbe latter are apt to result injuriously, while such bepralioa nrakes more convenient certain liu'e attention to which breeding ews are entitled as the yeaning season approaches, and which may be profitable accorded to them. Advantage will be found in subdi vision of tbe several sees and sexes into as many smaller lots as circumstances will ad mit of, as such course lessens the liabilty to crowoing and over-feeding of the strong er animals at the expense of the weaker ones. It also brings each animal more di rectly under the eye of tbe attendant, who will the more readily detect the first symp toms of deviating from the desired thrift Pbcsisq Shrubs. Among spirxts, dcutzias and many other shrubs, a multi tude of sprouts will start from the roots. These should be thinred out con siderably, for it is far better to have a few strong, well seasoned shoots than a large number oi watery, weakly sprouts, borne trees will be sprouting ad over their stems; these fprouts had better tie rubbxl off at once, as it delayed later they will have to be cut off. Forsyth ias done blooming had belter be thinned out a Utile, and many of the long vinelike shoots cut back to good strong buds or sprouts. The multitude of sprouts they will be likely to produce can be considerably lessened by rubbing off; they will bloom all the better next spring. These is quite as much necessity for barn cleaningon the farm as for house-cleaning, and if fanners were as punctilious about tbe renovation and purification of the out-buildings as farmerings are about the dwellings, there would speedily be an improvement in the appearance ef things, and of convenience too. Lost, or misplac ed tools are brought to light bam, shed and shop furnishings put in order, space gained and a revival of cheerfulness every where. Find time for bam cleaning. To grow perfect cabbage it is needful to sow the seed in forcing-leds or drills hi the garden, and either to transplant or thin tbctn out into rows. When stt out put the plants down to the first leaves, so that the stem is all covered, else in Autumn the stems will crack open. Set the plants two feet apart, and the rows three feet and then they can be kept free from weeds more easy. Whis fattening an animal for beef let the process be as quick as posible. Any stint in feeding will make the meat tough and dry. Stall-fed animals will fatten more readily than others, and young ani mals require richer food than older ones. In winter fattening much depends upon the warmth of tbe stable. The warmer the cattle are kept tbe less food will be needed. Feof. Thomas, in speaking of insects injurious to orchards, recommends the re moval of tbe eggs of the tent caterpilar, which are found cemented In bunch sur rounding a twig; eggs of the tree hoppers, which are found in Utile slits beneath the outer bark; eggs of leaf -lice, minute, shin ing, black globules scattered upon twigs of the last year's growth. UtcBos W. It is estimated that with tbe yearly rain fall there is deposited about an average of eicht or ten pounds of ammonia per acre. To purchase tbe same in the form of sul phate of ammonia would cost th" fanner about f 2. 80 per acre. This may be called the man una! value of an acre of rain. Another rulatitute for Ivory, coral. leather, cacoutcbouc, etc., is now being in troduced. It is prepared as follows : Cel lulose woody fibre is treated with sul phuric acid, then washed with water to re move any excess of acid ; dried and con verted into a fine powdi r ; this is mixed with rosiu soap, in a mortar, and the soda of tbe soap is removed by treatment with sulphate of alumina. The mass is now collected, dried again, and pressed into cakes by hydrauHc pressure, these being then cut into thin plates, which are shaped bv afain subjecting them to pressure, By adding castor oil or glycerine to the mass, before pressure, the products tuay be made transparent ' It it not sufficiently well known to tbe public that zincs yieid to the action of fruit acids, and consequently that the .ise of zinc or galvanised iron in the preparation or preservaiiDn of fruit is not free from danger. DOMESTIC. t-. u.vrva There is no mere important branch in the process of culinary deveJopement than that of bread making, or any th t requires more practice and care. The Americans have more kinds of bread than any other nation, yet they do not always have better, ana generally no as i s. nfton found in other countries. There are many ways of making bread: by mixing with yeast by using leaven. Dysan risings and milk yeast and by mixing tte fl.Mir with water which is charged with carbonic acid, called aerated Dread, least bread is by far the most healthful and eon omical of ail modes of making it. There are a great many rules, but the fin prin ciples are always the same, i nests arc, one quart of flour, a little more than one fourth of a quart of water, one-fourth cf a cake of compiessed veat one-fourth of a tablespoonful of sugar. The water should always be blood warm, and the dough thor oughly kneaded to evemy uwuu' veast, and render the grain of the bread fine and uniform. Milk is often used instead of water, with a little butter, which makes it mors nutritious: yet there is no bread which has tbe delidou, sweet taste oi the wheat and which will keep as long as yeast bread made with water. Leaven, i,;k An. aoaniatea more with cookery described in biblical literature, is a paste made of flour and water and allowed to sour. Sometimes housekeepers and bakers keep a piece of tbe risen dough for the next mixing, and this is called leaven. PsEtmnsiA There are tew diseases in which special treatment adapted to individ ual cases is more important than in pneu monia: for the measures that would be salutarv in one case would be injurious or even fatal in another. In the belief, there fore, that such general directions as could be given in the limited scope of this article would he likely to do quite as much harm as good, the few remaining remarks shall refer to tbe office of nurse rather than to that of doctor. The patient shonld lie with his shoulders somewhat elevated. In protracted and debilitated cases his position should be changed occasionally, in order to preve-t the settling of tbe blood in any part of the lungs. Care should be taken to ex pose the chest and body as htue as possible. Tbe air of the sick room should be of a uniform temperature, and warm, yet pun fled by sufficient ventilation. In early staees, what little diet tbe patient can take, should be farinaceous drinks, such ss gum water, barley na'er, thin gruel, to which may be added a decoction of npe fruit or the juice of oranges or fresh grapes, the indigestion portion ting carefully rejected. As tbe fever abates give tea, with toasted biead or crackers, or a little rice; then Indian mush milk, broths, lighter mev, eggs, oysters. In this, as in other diseases, nature powerfully aids a sound constitution. and with good nursing, and a little medical treatment, will veiy olten sumce. A Substitcte fob PicsLks. Sometimes one caicu'ates wrong in regard to tbe quan tity of pickles necessary to last untd ' 'green leaves come sgain," and so at this time of tbe year is obliged to buy pickles, which prove to be poor and expensive and no sub stitute whatever to the appetite of the adult whose palate has ceased to be pleased with "bougliten" things. If cabbaee caa be procured a really good pickle can be made with it Here are two rules : Slice and boil until tender three heads ot cabbage, as for coldslaw ; add a little salt and vinegar to tbe water in which they are boiled, when done take out and spread on plates and drain on tbe v negar and water. Tben put in a jar and pour warm, fresh vinegar over. Sweeten to taste: celery seed and mustard are good to season with. For the other kind of pickle seiect a nice head of cabbage. Alter removing the outside leaves, and inspecting it carefully to se that there are no worms or bugs, shave it very fine, and put it in a jar, spnukle salt and pepper over it, and spice if you choose; a red pepper sMced and put in is good. Pour over it enough cold vinegar to cover it This will be ready for use in about three days. Rkepisg the Head cieax. Keeping the head perfectly clean is a great aid to health. A distinguished physician, who has spent much of his time at quarantine, said that a person whose bead was tbor ' ughly washed every day, rarely took con- Ueious diseases, but where the hair was allowed to become dirty and matted it was hardly possible to escape infection. Many persons find speedy relief for nervous head ache by wa-hing the head thoroughly in weak soda water. We have known cases almost wholly cured in ten minutes by this simple remedy. A friend finds it the great est relief in cases of "rose cold," tbe cold symptoms entirely leaving tbe eyes and nose after one thorough washing of tbe hair. Tbe head should be thoroughly dned afterwards, and avoid draughts of air for a little while. To Crystaum Flo wees. Construct some baskets of fancy form with pliable copper wire, and wrap them with gauze. Into these tie to the bottom violets, ferns, geranium leaves in fact any flowers ex cept full-blown roses, and sink them in a solution of alum, of one pound to a gallon of water, after tbe solution nascooied. Tbe colors wdl then be preserved in their orig inal beauty, ana the cry stall zed alum will hold faster than when from a but so lution. When you nave a light covering of crystals that completely covers the arti cles, remove the basket carefully and allow it to drip for twelve hours. These baskets make a beautiful parlor ornament and for a long time preserve the freshness of the flowers. Household decorators are invited to listen to the following bint from the col umns of the American Cultivator: There is nothing that looks so pretty in the shops and so ugly on the walls as a great deal of cilt. It kills evety bngbt color in the fur niture, spo'ls all the pictur s, belittles sta tues and china. Nothing but a gorgeous Japanese fan will tone it down, and in time one tires of Japanese fans. East Method of Wash ro. The recipe for an easy washing liquid, viz: Four oun ces of soap, one teaspoon! ul of turpentine, and two ot ammonia, mixed in tea gallons of water, is not in any way injurious to tbe person using it Tbe effect is to more easily dissolve the dirt in tbe clothes and to render the washing much easser. There is nothing in :t to injure the clothes. Brazilian Tea Dish.
