A. Sponsler, of this Senatorial district However, the two chief competitors were Grow and Oliver. Mr. Grow, ever since the November election, nsed the ut most efforts to secure a sufficent num ber of the members of the Legisla ture to elect him Senator. When the Caucus met to determine on a candi date, the Grow people discovered that thev had not a sufficient number to nominate their favorite. Mr. Oliver was the choice of the majority of the Republican members of the Legisla tme. Mr. Grow is a man of com manding ability, and it is believed that if he had not been identified with the Greeley movement to dis organize the Republican party he could easily have been nominated for the office of United States Senator. Stalwart Republicans declare that they wid not support a man or men for offiVe who have been of the weather-coJc quality of men in poli tics, one time crowing in the camp of the enemy, and the next time flop ping over into the Republican camp to crow. The Grow people say that it is the support that Senator Camer on gives to Oliver that causes him to tower above all others. Be that as it may, it does not affect the fact that Senator Cameron has just as much right to express a preference for his choice as any other man has the right to express a preference, and that there is no more wrong in his labor for the man of his choice than there is wrong in other men laboring for the man of their choice. The Grow men did not attend the caucus that gave Oliver the nomina tion by a majority of the Repub lican members of the Legislature, and their action has been variously commented on. Stalwart Republi cans and disciplinarians favored the majority nominee. Men of easy pol itics, and with kicking proclivities favored the Grow people in their revolutionary work, and so the Sena torial question dragged itself along till on yesterday Tuesday which, being the third Tuesday of Jiinuary, the day on which the law impera tively demands that the Legislature go into convention for the election of a United States Senator, at three o'clock P. M At that hour yester day, Tuesday, January 18, 1881, the Legislature convened in convention. The vote in the House stood, Wal lace, 77 ; Oliver, 75 ; Grow, 44 ; scat tering, 3. In the Senate the vote stood, Wallace, 16 ; Oliver, 20 ; Grow 12. To-day at 3 o'clock the lomt convention will meet and ballot, and so it will do. every day till a result is i reached. 1 here are 93 Democrats in the Leg- ( islature : 84 of that iiuiuIkt met in caucus and nominated Senator Wal lace for United States Senate. There fire 1.3H Republicans in the Legisla ture. The election is by a majority vote of all the members. A majority vote is 12'5. It is only two short months ago since an organized effort was luade by the publication of the forged Chi nese Morcy letter by the Democracy, to imprest! the mind of the people of this country with the belief that the Republic is in danger of being over run by the Chinese. Now the conn try is nettling to a realization of the fact that the Chinese letter was a monstrous fraud, gotten np to elect a Democratic President That fact demoiisl rates to a certainty what the men who control the iHxuocratk or ganization will do. The position that the lh'tuorracy desired to put the lU'puhlicatt party in, has Wen swept away. Somehow or other the impression has bceu so well stomped on the hu man nund that from generation to generation it believes that the people will never be drowned on tne eartn as they were by the great flood, known in Bible history as "Noah's flood," The next destruction of the human race is to be by fire. Scientific men say that the destruction of the hu man family and all animal life may take place quite soon, by a collision of an approaching comet with the sun. A writer a few days ago pub lished the following, as regards the approaching comet : Professor Proctor, the greatest of living astronomers, who has made the investigation of the approaching comet a special study, gives the re sult of his observations to the public, and his conclusions are that an awful collision of the sun and comet are certain, and that changes in another stellar system will take place, and the sun may afterward resume its ordi nary influence. The menacing comet is the one recently visible in 1880 in the Australian heavens, and which is one of the most interesting comets ever seen by man. Views respecting it, not by fanciful theorizers, but by mathematicians of eminence by no means prone to adopt vivid and start ling ideas, suggest the possibility nay, even some degree of probability that the comet may bring some dan ger to the solar system. Like the comet of 1843. it jwssed within about 190.000 miles from the solar surface, and a path similar to that pursued by the comet of 1843 w hile in the neigh borhood of the sun. The comet of 1880 is, in fact, identical with the comet of 1843, but its period is di minishing rapidly, so that at an early date it may fall into the 6un, with this alarmini? immediate result that all higher forms of life, at least, will be destroyed off the surface of the earth.
