fr the following t Mr. William L. Cooper,
Resident Clerk of the House of Represen
tatives, had a singular experience recently.
About two years ago, in alighting from a
carriage, bis right leg was broken at the
ankle, an4 oas been to some extent weak
ev.-r since. About three weeks ago an ab
cess began to torm on the calf of the right
leg. aud on awakening one morning be
found he was unable to walk, o ing to the
intense pain. His leg was examined and
the surgeons expressed the opinion that a
splinter of bone was working out of the
sore. Some days alterward, whi.e dressing
the sore siot, be noticed a little black splin
ter prolrudiug from it, aud catching hold of
the black object he pulled from his leg a
large needle, one incb aud a half in length
and black as jet. The needle is perfect as
regards point and eye, and is smooth aud
polished. How it got luto his person, Mr.
Cooper cannot say but It is argued with
considerable reason that he must have swal
lowed it while very young and it has re
mained in him ever since, working itsrway
down to the calf of the leg. We have of
ten read ol similar iustauccs, but never be
fore recorded one.
As exchange rites s Leibig's theory
that liquor-drinking is compatible with ani
mal but not with larinaceous diet, seems to
have been corroborated by an English sci
entific man, who has been trying the exper
iment on twenty -seven liquor-drinking per
sons. Astiiking instance of reform was
shown in the case of a man of sixty, who
had been intemperate for thirty-five years,
and was in the habit of taking a spree about
once a week. His constitution was so shat
tered that be had great difficulty in obtaio-
I ing an insurance on bis life. After an at
tack of delirium tremens, wind nearly
proved fatal, he was induced to live on rari
naceous food, which in seven mouths en
tirely removed bis desire for liquor, and he
became perfectly sober. He lost flesh at
the beginning of the experiment, but re
gainiu it ai ter two or three months. Among
the articles of food mentioned as specially
antagonistic to alcohol are lentiles, dried
beans, haricot beans and maccarooi, all of
which should be well boiled and seasoned
with butter or olive oil. Ordinary garden
vegetables are said to be provocative of
temperance, but much less so than farina
ceous diet. The carbonaceous starch con
tained in maccaroni, beans and oil seems to
render unnecessary, and, therelore repul
sive, the carbon ressideut in alcohol. This
remedy is so very simple that It ought to be
tested by men who hate so often tried to
ttreaE themselves of intemperate habits.
Drinking to excess is unquestionably liUrse
to every American city, and farinaceous
food has never hurt anybody.

The discovery of a grand cave, located
on the land of Daniel Mitterling, about three
miles east of Richfield, has art ak otic 3 con
siderable interest. The following is a de
scription of the interior of the caver The
opening is just large en ni'i for a man to

calcium of lime-stone. The Walls are cov
ered wiib small stalagmitcst many of which
are in the form of the teeth of animals, cal
cified into crystals, and others into charm
ing beads. The floor is formed of a calca
reous oarthen base. J. S. Arnold and J. F.
Zimmerman, accompanied by others, made
a careful exploration of the cave. Several
ol the finest specimens of petrified vegeta
ble were taken therefrom, which J. S. Ar
nold pronounced petrified baik. Some of
these specimens are now in possession of
the writer. A specimen was presented to
Mr. S. V. Mills, a professional miueralogist,
of Bambridge, Lancaster county, Pa. Mr.
Mills pronounced the specimen to be calcif
erous petrified bark."
The petrified curiosity mentioned iborei
is mora particularly spoken of in another
communication from the same )ltce, thus:
" A curiosity in the form of a petrifac
tion was very recently found upon the farm
of Mr. Jacob j-hclfy, near P.ichfleld, Jtiuiata
county, and which is now in the possession
ol Mr. S. V. Mill, mineralogist, of Bain
bridge, this State. This specimen is pre-sun-ed
by Mr. M. to be a composition of
wood, oxide of iron and silex, and is tno
more carious on account of the matter last
named being tL- picdominating element
contained in it So perteet is it in form as
to strongly Show the tuces of vegetable
fibre aud knots of Wood mineralised in its

the already large collection of mineral mat

BRITISH GRAIN TRADE.
I.OSBOX, Nov. 19. The flirk lane Ex
prtis, in its review of the British grain
trade for the pist week, says : " Except 1
few beans, harvest is now secured in Eng
land. In the Scotch uplands the cereal
crops ere Mil! beii.g harve--d, mostly in
the unripe state. TNeScotch harvest, how
ever, w ill probably be terminated in a week
or ten diys. Farmers so generally availed
themselves of the favorable weather lor
field ooeratlon", Which continued lip to Fri
day, when there was a sbsrp tn.st, that
threshing has been neglected. The sup
plies at the country mirket were conse
quently licht, and w heat in a St state tor
either sowing or trilling was decides, iy
scarce. Fortunately a good area b.i .
ready bwn sown in wheat under circum
stances w hich augur favorably. The recent
uncoi.trariicted estimate of this year's crops
eli.-ws tUJt II aiil be necessary to import
lS.UOO.O'O quarters of foreign wheat
Doubtless, wiih every allowance for possi
ble exsgeerations, the crop is desperately
liad. The Mark Lane and country markets
have b.-en dull, wilh liberal arrivals from
abroad. Prices hare fallen Is. tor all de
scriptions of wheat. There was not much
pressure to sell, but the enormous visible
supply in America, and the uncertainty as
to the actual extent of the surplus available
lor export thence, caused a pretty general
abstention of buyers front, the market. Un
til something more definite is known trade
must feel its way cautiously. In some uar
Icrs a strong opinion prevaiii that wheat w ill
prove re-iiuiierativ- even at the present
prices. Doubtless a decline of a few shil
lings will bring forward a number of specu
lative buyers. The arrival, at ports ol call
have been large. Early in tho week whe it
off coast de.-hned ss bw as fits, for r-d
winter for the Continent, but silliswjnently
prices rallied Gd. to Is. pi-rqu.irt.-r. Maize
was in lair inquiry, principally for the Con
tinent, at about ihe late rales. Wheat for
M:ipment was quiet in conse.jnenrr r tlie
hitll price asHed in America. Maize was
dull. Earh'y recelid Od.tols. per (purler.
Tfte sales of English wheat last week
amounted to 3!,n:!5 quarters at 48s. n I. per
quarter, against 54,740 quarters at 4". 7d.

The imports into the United Kingdom for
