Cooper, Resident Clerk of the House of Represen tatives, had a singular experience recently. About two years ago, in alighting from a carriage, bis right leg was broken at the ankle, an4 oas been to some extent weak ev.-r since. About three weeks ago an ab cess began to torm on the calf of the right leg. aud on awakening one morning be found he was unable to walk, o ing to the intense pain. His leg was examined and the surgeons expressed the opinion that a splinter of bone was working out of the sore. Some days alterward, whi.e dressing the sore siot, be noticed a little black splin ter prolrudiug from it, aud catching hold of the black object he pulled from his leg a large needle, one incb aud a half in length and black as jet. The needle is perfect as regards point and eye, and is smooth aud polished. How it got luto his person, Mr. Cooper cannot say but It is argued with considerable reason that he must have swal lowed it while very young and it has re mained in him ever since, working itsrway down to the calf of the leg. We have of ten read ol similar iustauccs, but never be fore recorded one. As exchange rites s Leibig's theory that liquor-drinking is compatible with ani mal but not with larinaceous diet, seems to have been corroborated by an English sci entific man, who has been trying the exper iment on twenty -seven liquor-drinking per sons. Astiiking instance of reform was shown in the case of a man of sixty, who had been intemperate for thirty-five years, and was in the habit of taking a spree about once a week. His constitution was so shat tered that be had great difficulty in obtaio- I ing an insurance on bis life. After an at tack of delirium tremens, wind nearly proved fatal, he was induced to live on rari naceous food, which in seven mouths en tirely removed bis desire for liquor, and he became perfectly sober. He lost flesh at the beginning of the experiment, but re gainiu it ai ter two or three months. Among the articles of food mentioned as specially antagonistic to alcohol are lentiles, dried beans, haricot beans and maccarooi, all of which should be well boiled and seasoned with butter or olive oil. Ordinary garden vegetables are said to be provocative of temperance, but much less so than farina ceous diet. The carbonaceous starch con tained in maccaroni, beans and oil seems to render unnecessary, and, therelore repul sive, the carbon ressideut in alcohol. This remedy is so very simple that It ought to be tested by men who hate so often tried to ttreaE themselves of intemperate habits. Drinking to excess is unquestionably liUrse to every American city, and farinaceous food has never hurt anybody. ATTENTION !
