Some days ago, llr. Ephraiin
Hanghawout attempted to compound
and lxil a medicine that is said to
cure ringlione on the leg or legs of a
horse. The preparation was to be
used on a horse owned hv jLvs. L.ycua
(luyer, of East Salem, Delaware twp.
To give the compound the requisite
curative quality it must needs be
boiled. In this case the boiling pro
cess was undertaken at the house of
the lady above mentioned. Before
the medicine hail been brought to the
necessary consistency it took fire.
Hanghawout took hold of the vessel
and threw it out of a door, and just
at that instant Jliss Julia Devinney,
a maiden sister of Mrs. Guycr, was
near enough to receive a portion of
the burning liquid on her uress, put
ting all her clothing on fire. Haugh
awout ran out and did his utmost to
extin"niph the flames on the ladv's
dress, threw her down and attempted
to 6mother the flames by rolling her
in the grass, but before the fire was
outened her clothing was nearly all
burned off her person, and her body
most severely burned. Her life was
almost despaired of. Later reports
of her health represent it as improv
ing. Haughawout's hands were
dreadfully burned.

Axd now the story comes from the
congregation of the Twelfth Baptist
Church in Phildclphia, and runs some
thing like this : An old lady, a mem
ber of the church, one night at a late
hour, saw their preacher walking most
tenderly with a young lady of the flock,
where there was no occasion to walk.
She told some other nember ol the
congregation, and then it went from one
to the other, until it reached the
priacher's wife. That lady took the
preacher's new love to task in chuicb,
one day after the benediction had been
pronounced. Such a scene ! Suffice it
to say, that the case went into tbe in
vestigation of a committee appointed by
the church. The committee, as yef,
have found nothing that is really bad
against the couple that is, the preach
et and tbe young lady. All good peo
ple in Philadelphia hope they may not.
Guees the old lady didn't have ber
specks on, and mistook other people for
ber pastor and sister in tbe church.
The Perry county Freeman says : On
last Thursday evening the foreman at
McNeal A, Black taunery, Pieasant
ville, Bedford Co., drew out a plug in
order to run water into the leeches, a
process required in tbe manipulation of
the liquor in the same.
Through some inadvertansy he forgot
to replace the proper time, and the wa
ter running all night, ovetflowed the
leeches, sixteen in number, driving
the strong liquor into a drain, leading
from tbe tannery into Buffalo Bun at
Nycnm'j bridge, the effect being most
disastrons to the finny tribe, killing
all the fish in the stream, big and little,
from tbe bridge to the Juniata, a dis
tance of three quarters of a mile suck
ers, pike, catS.-h and eels all charing
a common fate; even tbe life-tena-ciousness
of the two latter piscatorial
not being proof against the pungent li
quid. It M said that several barrels of fish
mipht have been picked np four days
since tbe catastrophe.
A CARD.
TO THE AMERICAN PTBI.IC.
For many years we have made two
tncduines suited to tbe ailments of a
vast class of sufferers. Thousands of
cures have been made by them. But
within the last two years counterfeits
of our medicines have sprung up, dan
gerous in their close imitation of our
Trade Mark. To secure the people we
have p'aeed upon each genuine box of
Holloway's Pills and Ointment the fac
Minile of the signature of our Agent,
Mr. Jos Uaydock. To couutetfeit this
is felony. We shall relentlessly pur
sue any one who imitates this with the
Utmost vigor ot tbe law. tVe most
earnestly beg that tbe great mans of
the American people will aid us in our
efforts to protect their health, and help
us in our task of bringing these most
unprincipled men to the bar of justice.
Uniformly refuse to purchase Medi
cines purporting to be ours unless Mr.
Jos. Havdock's signature is attached
to each Box of Pills or Pot of Oint
ment and the end will soon be reached.
