Our neighbor across the way ex-Sheriff
Loudon has lost no energy by moving to
town io live. Last week be was very busy
farming bis lots, superintending the sinking
of a well, and managing his tailoring estab
lishment. A Spelling Bee w.U be held in Ked Cork
acbool house oa Thursday evening. May 27,
1875, for the benefit of the Sunday School
of that place. Webster will be the stand
ard. The rules, prizes, admision, fcc., will
be made known.
On the 12th Inst., the oirice at the saw
mill of Dobhs, Brother Jt Co., at Rivd's
Gap, this conntt, waa destroyed by fire.
The fire started by a spark from the engine.
An effort was made to save it but of no
avail, owing to the high wind. Xo insurance.
Some sacrilegious thief eutered the l ap- j
tist cburcU, at Mill Creek, Huntingdon
county, a few nights ago, nd robbed tbe
contribution bos of alwnt twenty dollars.
This sum was deposited by the Sabbath

George Wilson, a native of this town, and
Assistant United States District Attorney
for the Western District. It was his first
sppuarance before tbe Court, he having
lieeo but recently apjxiinted. The Pit la
burg Gazette, a reliable paper, commends
him as a roinising young man.

Ax ast of Assembly, passed at tbe
last session of the State Legislature,
makes it a misdemeanor to carry pis
tols, lazurs, dirk knives, slung shots
and all ntbet description of concealed ;
deadly weapons; and upon conviction,
imposes a fine, on tbe person so offend- J
ing, of not less tban $500 and a term
of imprisonment of not more tban one
year, or cither, or both, at the discre
tion of tbe court. This ia a wise and
salutary law and should be strictly en
forced, if for no other purpose tban to
prevent the carrying aud careless hand
ling of dangerous weapons, by those
who are iu tbe habit of using them
when under tbe influence of liquor.
Under tbe Act, tbe jury may infer
malice, from tbe fact of the defendant
carrying such weapons.
Tbe barn of Joseph Harshbarger, in
Bratton township, barely escaped de
struction by fire on Saturday afternoon
last, under tbe following circumstances :
Mrs. Uirshbarger was working in the
garden, and bad set fire to a pile of
rubbish, which she stirred np from time
to time with a piece of rake handle,
tbe end of which became charred. One
of Ibe children took this stick, and car
ried it about tbe garden and into the
woodshed, where he left it. One of tbe
men was digging garden, and as he went
to tbe barn for manure discovered
smoke issuing from tbe woodshed, which
was full of dry rails etc. He ran for
water, but be tore be got back tbe fire
bad gained snob headway that a bucket
of water was of no avail. He called
assistance, and the farm bell was rung,
i which attracted tbe attention of some
railroad bands in tbe vicinity, wbo
! came to tbe reecne. A bigh wind pre
vailed at tbe tisae, and tbe firs was
eomc:anicated to tbe roof of the bara
three times, bnt it was extinguished by
tbe men. Tbe shed was entirely con
sumed, with a quantity of dry wood.

sat. After dispatching tbe animal, tbe
old gentleman was ready for a hearty
