Pa., Feb. 28, 1876. James McKnight, Est)., Supervisor JVo. 6, Middle Div., P. R. R. .Dear Sir, Tcnr letter of jesterdaj, tender ing toe jonr resignation aa SgperTiaor, was recci-ed by me with feelings of most sincere regret first, because of tbe reasons calling forth the resigna tion, and second, because the Company should lose the services of so old and alocd an employee. 1 bave not been here long enough to know from my own observation of your true worth, bat the high commenda tions that I bare beard of yon from those who have bad such opportunity, and the condition of that part of the road that baa been, under your immediate charge, convinces me that I, as well as the Company, am losing a most valua ble officer. I will arraDge to relieve you by tbe 1st of the tnontb, as yon request, and j I sincerely hope that with the relief yon will experience when freed from tbe cares of business, that you will rapidly regain yonr accustomed health ; and in tbe future shcaid there be any thing in which I can be of service to you, I certainly hope you will call on me. Very sincerely yours, JAMES McCREA, Superintendent Middle Div. P. R. B. A Milrot correspondent of the Lew istown Sentinel relates this of the death of Lieut. McLenabcn, which took place last Saturday a week : From all that I can learn 1 sift the following facts : Lieut. McLenahen rose as usual on Sat urday morning, and proceeded to tbe bsrn to feed bis stock. II. R. McN'itt, a trotber-in-Iaw, has beeu assisting him all winter in doing chores, Ac, about the barn. Oa Saturday morn ing he carte as usual and asked if there was anything to be done to-day. Mr. McL. replied nothing but water the horses and feed tbe calves, and that he could da it himself. Mr. McN'itt, how ever, took from tbe stable a pair of horses and watered them at a creek some distance away, leaving Lieut. McL. standing against the barn. When he returned he could not find him. He then went inte the back entry lo get some straw to feed the calves, and while passing through tbe entry (a dark and narrow one) stumbled over the pros trate form of Lieut. McLenahen. Hav ing fainted at tbe corn-crib tbe day before, Mr. McNitt thought tbe same bad aga'.n occurred, and after some dif ficulty with the deceased's dog drew him to the light in an adjoining entry. m. . ... .. . . ; . Noticing blood on his lorchcad he thought be had fallen agaiust the stones of tbe wall in tbe tck entry, (be tbiuks be was brealhiug at the time he found bis body), and then giving tbe alarm at tbe house, mounted a horse, came to Milroy, and returned with Dr. A. Harfbhifg.-ir. Before he returned, however, ail was over with poor Hiram, and then be discovered for tbe first time that be was shot. Subsequent search in the entry revealed a large pool of blood and a navy revolver. Lieut. McLenahen Lad used this re volver for shouting rats and cats, and kept it constantly about tbe barn. Tbe ball entered Lib on his forehead, but did not go through the head which leads mloy to believe that in getting it from the place Le Was accustomed tj keep it on a girder above bis bead it discharged, accidentally, with this fatal lesult. He leaves a wife and five children. The Carlisle Herald says : Mr. Jesse Laverty, of East I'cnnsboro', living near Iioosers Mill; was lately very much annoyed by rats, which carried off his ergs and made sad work with his corn in the crib, and then invaded his granary aud commenced destroying a bin of wheat. Mr. L., cb examina tion, found there was but one place wbcre the rats got in. He thereupon resolved to kill the rats by an artifice well worthy of the cause. He strewed corn meal liberally on the floor of the granary, and about one hour later be nailed the bole shnt ; he then called bis dog (a Spanish terrier) and armed with a club went forth to battle. Now the door of the granary is fast ened by a long wooden latch extending full acrosa the door and can only be i opened from the outside, and Mr. L., on entering the granary drew tbe door shut and heard tbe latch fall. He then thought the enemy was bis, but this was an error, for the rats were more numerous than he expected, and, find irg no way of escape, attacked both Mr. L. and his dog with great fury. Mr. L. laid On his blows bard and fast, and one blow, aimed at a rat, unfortu nately bit the dog on the head and killed him. Mr. L., being thus deprived of bis faithful ally, would have fled but could not. He then commenced calling for help, the rats meanwhile kept skirmish ing around his legs, fan bp his body, bit bis hand, and one bolder than tbe rest bit his nose. It is impossible to say what the result of this unequal contest would bave been had not a passing neighbor, attracted by tbe noise and cries, went to the relief of Mr. L., who presented a shocking spectacle, hi face and hands bloody, and bis clothes torn into shreds. Mr. L., beiog washed and rehabili tated, sat down to reflect, when be luckily bit on better plan of warfare. He went and borrowed twelve eats, which with his own made fifteen ; these he in tbe evening shut op in his gran ary with the rats, and the next morn ing ha found, on examination, ten dead eats, one blind, and two with one eye piers. Tb remaining two wera ua hurt, and by actual eount he found one hundred and nineteen dead rats ; of tbe dead dog there was nothing left but the bones and hair, the rats doubtless having eaten him while Mr. Li waa bunting eats. Ox ii si at, Jcxiatl Co-, Pa., ) March 2o, 1875. J Ms. ScnWEiER : Thinking that an occasional letter from tbe lower end of the county would not be unwelcome, I take the liberty of writing a short com munication for the perusal of yonr readers. Things generally are moving about in the usual order, liy tbe best estimate wb can make tbe earth, at our place, performs revolution in about twenty four hours; and that is, I believe, about as much as it ever did. We, country people; don't pay at tention to "dog fights," "caterwatilibg on the roofs by moonlight," 'grocdd bgM w 'Dog shadows," &e., as edi tors of newspapers iu towns, where ney must take hold of anything to make locals, " and elaborate opbn everything, to fill space. Financially well, there is ho Use talking of it ; finances belong to tbe things which are past. We Lad twenty-six tnow-falls this winter, measuring ia the aggregate a depth of sever, feet. The cold at times was intense ; but 1 suppose at jour place, on the banks of the romantic Juniata, under the shadow of that mag- j oificent structure on the public square, you were enjoying the genial rays of ' , n r c 1 r i - ! """",US May breezes all tbft tifie. I was amused the other day upbn beariog an argument advanced by an intelligent Democrat, who Las bsea holding an office for tbe last 12 or 15 years, against tbe Civil Rights bill. It was in substance this : If a negro would come to your house, abuse you, insult your wife, and in any and every respect violate and over-ride all limits of decency, peace and good order, and you would interfere, and not permit him to do just as he pleased, be could prosecute you and bave you fined $500. Well, now, let politics be politics, and when a man feels convinced that be is rigbt, let him go ahead ; but wbed men, who claim to be possessed of an ordinary amount (or a little more) of intelligence, argue such absurdities to their followers, it shows precisely what amount of intelligence and common sence they accord to them. It would be enough to insult even a Chinaman, and it would he almost a riisfrrucp to , . . , offer such stuff to tbe credence of an Esquimaux, and yet such men bae tbe audacity to offer it to educated Amer icans, and theu say "follow us." Oh, s'jatoe ! where is tby blush . Mr. Amos Miller has retited from tbe mercantile business, on aecount of im paired health. He retires with tbe good wishes of the community.
