AS PER LEWISTOWN PAPERS.
About two weeks ago a stranger who
gave bis name as Jacob Breueman, call
ed several times upon tbe agent of Ad
ams Express Co., at Mattawana, in this
county, and inquired whether a pack
age of money bad arrived addressed to
him, and on U ivg informed that it bad
not, appeared to be very much disap
pointed, and thereupon sent a telegram
to Mr. W. C. Murray, at Elizabeth
town, Laocaster county, which in a day
or two brought tbe looked-for money,
$500. Upon call the package was de
livered to him, the agent of course sas
pecting nothing of foul play. Subse
quently, however, it was discovered

Jacob Breneman, of Lewistowa, sup
posed if was bis relative who wanted
tbe money, and for that reason sent it ;
and that tbe stranger calling himself
Jacob Breneman was simply a rascal

Rer. J. P. Long, of the MJroy
charge, bas awakened a great religions
interest In Allenville. Up to Friday
last SI converts bad been announced,
and 16 penitents were at tho altar.
On Thursday last Jacob and Samuel
Bupp and Geo. Womer were taken be
fore E?q. Orr, in Decatur township,
charged wi'h improper behavior during
public worship in Xemerling chapel on
Sunday, the 20th nit. In default of
bail tbey would have been brought to
tbe county jail, had not Constable Folk,
ou account of the illness of his wife,
helped them to beg off.
The colored people have a debating
society.
The rector Rer. T. W. Martin, of
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, has re
signed the Rectorship f this Parish.
On Weduesday of last week Mrs.
Sarah Davis, wife of Edward Davis, of
McVeytowu, died in great agory, from
the effeots of a dose of arsenic, which
she bad taken a few days previous, to
end her life. She was ouly abott 20
years of age, and Lad been married but
about year. She was an estimable
woman, and her rash act is deplored by
a wide circle of friends and relatives.
She was a daughter of Thomas Coch
ran, of Wayne township.
The Tea Party on Tuesday night was
a decided success, everybody beiug de
lighted. It netted about $200 to tbe
Centennial fund.
Sheriff Muthersbaugh last week
brought here a man named Jos. George,
from near Ashland, Ohio, on a requisi
tion from the Govei nor, charged with
having stolen about $100 from Mr.
Weiser, residing above lielleville.
Several BMscliievoua boys, who are
getting a more than ordinary street ed
ucation, were arrested on Monday, at
the iustance of the school board, for
going into the old school building and
builditig a fire therein on Sunday last.
They were bound over to appear at
court. There are some others nightly
on the streets whose parents would do
well to look a'tcr them.
Joste, aged 6 ye-rs, Willie, aged 3
years, aud Mary, aged 10 months, chil
dren of CLristopiier Hutchinson, resi
ding on Third street, west of Brown,
were ft'llj enld-d on Tuesday,
by the upsetting of a tea kettlo off a
stove, filled with boiling water. Tbe
three were arouud tbe stove, and one of
tbem, in getting upon a bench behind
it, tilted the kettle. Mary, the young
est, was the most severely injured, her
lower liiubsand arms being badly scald
ed. Willie hid both hands anl Jesie
one hand scalded.

Philip Keel, of Allen's Cove, Penn
township, this county, caught a she-wolf
in bis fox-trap on Tuesday night of lat
week. Her wclfthip broke way with
the trap on tbe approach of Mr. Keel,
when be shot and killed her. Th:s is
no doubt one of the wolves reported as
seen iu Rye towusbip last winter.
On Saturday a week about 15,000
California salmon, hatched for the gov
ernment by Dr. Stuck, at Bloomsburg,
New Jersey, were sent to Col. James
Worrell, of Ilarrisbnrg, and by him
placed in the Yellow Drecches and 1 o
nodnguinet Creeks in Cumberland
county, for the purpose of stocking
those streams.
Our friends alonij the old Sherman's
Valley route are now certain of having
a railroad. We learn that men were
put to work last Monday to grale por
tions of the surveyed line, and we are
informed that tho work will be pushed
ahead as fast a possible The road
will st-iit at Marysville, striking Sher
man's creek near Shermandale, th.-nce
along the creek to Laudifburg and op
the valley above Germantowo, wLerj i
short tunnel through the mountains rill
allow them to emrge in Path Valley,
Franklin county. We hope the antici
pations of our up valley fnemls will be
fully realized during the coming sum

Our young townsman Aleck Miller,
was presented with a fine, bouncing, 12
pound boy, on Friday morning last and
is as bappy and proud as as a king.

floors. In Huntingdon they should do
likewise.
Dudley was the scene of a cowardly
assault Sabbath last. Charles Grots, a
blacksmith ou East Broad Top railroad
visited Dudley and while walking from
the latter place to Karne ttstown met
James Eagan, a quite inoffensive young
mau from tbe "back switches" and stab
bed bini iu tbe side with a large pock
et knife. Eagau escaped further in
jury by flight. Corstable Dalton
promptly arrested Grots, and took bim
before Esq. Canty, who committed him
for trial, aud he is now safe in Fort
Honck. Why tbe assault was made no
one knows. Grotz was perfectly sober
(and Eagan always h) when he commit
ted tbe deed, and yet expressed regret
that be had not killed his victim.
Tuesday afternoon last Mr. Daniel
Sorley, an aged farmer cf Penn town
ship, was found diad in the field by his
son-in-law Mr. M. Feyley. lie bad
complained of pain io bis heart at noon
and tbe family urged bim to stay tn tbe
house, but after a while he got bet'er
and went out to plow, while doing which
he gtew wore, sat down aud instantly
expired. His son-in-law in returning
from chopping wood discovcied tbe body
shcrtly after death. An inquest was
held oo the body, when a verdict of
death from beart disease was rendered.
Mr. Sorley was in his sixty-third year
was well known and highly respected.
The entertainment given io Uraji. ill's
Hail, last evening, by the free schools of
this borough is reported to bars been a
pleasant entertainment.
Rev. Mr. Pardoe was handsomely do
nated bv his congregation la-t evening.
