The Philadelphia & Erie , Railroad, •nce it
was placed under the management r Super
intendent Tyler, has improved to a snderful
extent. Its trains run with as much egulazity
as any road in the State. its einp ogees are
generally polite and obliging, its passenger
coachei are (qual to the best, and its accom
modations are d,sily being increased. The
eatins., houses on the lino of this road surpass
those of any thro egh route from the Lakes to
the seaboard. The road is rapidly reviving
from the unpopularity it. obtained during the
control _of the former superintendent., and
bids fair to become a great favorite with the
traveling public-. - •-' '
Before the adjournmentpf the Legislature,
the members could not for;ego the temptation
of again voting money into their pockets.—

to a thousand for that particular session ;
now this is-made the permanent pay. When
gold was at nisrly 30,0. and everything much
higher than now. theY did not ask more than

New JerOy Legislatures receive but $3 per
dap, and the ablest men in the State serve for
that pay 'What do our-fix payers think of
the matter?
The Titusville Herald says 4, a shanty was
burned on %anis Run on Tuesday last, and

man's children, a little girl, attempted during
the; absence -of her mother to start a fire--

Gen. V. M.-Reed has been seriously ill for
Rome days, At one time having beer. so den.
gerhus na,not to be expected to live. lie has
beep in ill health far a long period, and hie

the 'constant drain upon his mental and physi
cal capacities necessitated by the extensive
nature at his business operatice e Dr. Brantle-,
the General's physician, pronounces him much
better now than he has been at any period

The peoples of this city will not be dis
pleased to learn that Mr. Roe has hen re
lieved from the command of the U S. S.
ltrchican From some amuse. the precise na
tnile of which is not known,. but mainly, it i 7
supposed. o ging to the 'fact that our citizens
did not take sufficient pains to minister to his
vanity, Mr. Roo conceived a mortal dislike
to Erie, which our people were not slow in
reciprocating. Every other commander of the
Michigan was a favorite hero, and so far as
we have had opportunities of learning, liked

The School Directors of our county will be
interested in thetall published in our columns
fern convention to elect a County Superin
tendent for the three succeeding years. It will
he perceived that the time has been changed
(for what reason we are not informed)' from
the .first Monday in May to the first Tuesday
in that month. The privilege heretofore ao
ot,rded the Directors of firing the salary of
'he Superintendent bag been taken away from
them by law, and the psy is apportioned ac
cording to the number of schools in the coun
ty. Mr. L. D Fisk, present Superintendent,
will be a candidate for re-election.
By the request of a number of his friends
here Dr. Barbour, the celebrated surgeon to
the Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Infirmary, will
visit Erie on the 2d of ?day, remaining at
Brown'q'hotel three days. His reputation for
the treatment of this particul-r kind of com—
plaints 'is too well know to require from as
any extended introduction of the Doctor to
our citizen
The Ftnan e Committee of Councils made a
report. on Janda) , evening, recommending
the followinv as the rates of taxes for 1866
General fund, 12 mills; Interest fund, 18
mills"; Water, 5 mills; Police, 3 mills-33
mills on the dollar'', all. These rates were
agreed•upon by the COuncili, and a commission
of three per cent. allowed the collectors for
securing the city taxes.
We ,are gratified with the,re.appointment
by the city Councils of Ttiemas Crowley as
Chief of Police. He is probably the fittest
man in the city for the position, and w'P are
confident
. that if given proper subordinates
he will perform its duties in ouch a manner
as to give general satisfaction In order that
he may be enabled to do_so, though, he should
be conceded-the privilege ,of selecting his own
nosistants. subject of course to the approval
of the Mayor and Councils.,

presume—asserts that the choler can be in
a greet meieut e averted by suitable sanitary

laws of health. Medical science has also
stripped it of its terrors, so that it is now as

If the cholera fails to nrke its appearance

be with our people. Most of them have
worked themselves into such a certainty of
belief that it is to visit us, that if there were
no other rause for the disease, their dread
atone would'be apt to bring it on.
