farmer.* gfjmilmcnt. Putting Bowq Butter, There is no peculiar art or mystery about putting down butter for winter use, so that it will keep sweet, sound and good a very long time. It only needs a proper receptacle, to know how, and scrupulous cleanliness, and all who make liutter may easily have a prime article either for sale, or for winter use, with very little trouble, »nd no extra expense. The last time we went around Cape Horn, we bought in Baltimore a few days before soiling two tubs of ordi nary Western butfer for cabin stores, it was chpap Ohip butter, but hap pening to have been made right and' properly put down, it was capital but ter all the voyage—"-outward bound, through the tropics, round the Horn, down through the tropics again in the Pacific to Guayaquil, two months in that oven, almost under the Equa tor ; then homeward bound, through the tropical heat in two oceans, and at last at the end of a year and t u days the bottom l iyer of l ie lsi-t nni cuino out for service on the day «> made the Delaware Capes, as sweet, lVcsh and sound as it was when w< went to sea outwari} bound. The butter had bdfcn correctly marie and put down in *#<■< t, na red oak tubs, holding about eighty pounds each, in this manner : '! ■: ■ bottom of the tub covered with i'r , clean salt, half-an-ineh tlii' k. Then a solid layer qi' butter about n anii n half inches thick ; then hail' an jttch of salt again, an<l •;» alternate-- ly, salt and butter—butter arid s,lll solid, to within two inches of the top of the tub, that space being iii! I with strong brine, and the h ni put in tight. During the entire \ < i pare was taken to keep thebni:er covered with brine, and whatever w as takon out for use wa? simply rinse | oft' in sea water. A great deal of the celebrated Or ange counly or Goshen butter is not nearly up to its reputation on account of being packed in one solid mass from bottom to top, or in layers of from three to five inches in thick - ncss, without any salt strato between, or being covered with pickle. Jlut ter put down in that manner will not keep good very long with all the Goshen reputation ever got up to back it. Of all the woods used for buttei tubs or kegs, the red beech, common in several of the northern counties of Pennsylvania and in many part of New York, is the best. The well seasoned red oak, then white elm. then white ash. After these, all our woods arc more or less bad for bm ter, and ought never to br u»ed. Of course the very best receptacle to put down butter in for long keeping is a strong, well glazed stone jar, with a close-fitting cover. But as snch vessels are too fragile for the hard knocks of transportation, they are only suitable for home use.— Beech, red oak or ash ought to ! e used viherever rough handling i- the rule.—J Exchange. Fattening Hogs. The editor of the Germantown Telegraph having made inquiries of a farmer as to the profitableness of pork raising and the best way to fe <1 nogs, received a reply, the substance of whjcli was: Ist. That feeding grain, espeeia .h --corn, to hogs will pay better than would the same amount fed to any other kind of farm stock. Hut this is qualified as to the kind < r breed of hogs fed and the manner of treating them. The breed should be tin "Chester White"—the nom dt J>IUHH of the writer—and they should be fed in such a manner as to a pound a day. In other words the Jtog, *t a year old, shou'd weigh -lii") pounds. Greater weight than this could be produced but ibv -i.-e would not pay the extra i-xj.- acc essary to procure it. 2d. One bushel of good shelled corn, made into meal and led m tin hogs regularly, in such qua nty - to prevent them from fretting lor more, will produce from five to Si vm j)ouuds of pork during the nion i. • o! October and November. Atio>- thi ecason of the year more feed is re quired and less p«rk produced ac cording to the quantity led. 3d. An important point is to keep the hogs growing all the time —not st irving them to mere hog frames, during the summer, and then attempt ing to finish oft' quickly on the arri val of cold weather. 4th. When put up in the fall—in deed dnring the entire season—a comfortable shelter 'should be provi. dedso that the hogs may avail them selves of it whenever a storm occurs, but when the autumnal storms coin-' menco the hogs should be penned for good till ready for slaughter. sth. With the pure "Chester White" stock of hogs, properly bro't forward during the spring and sum mer months, it is safe to teed eighty - live cent corn on a basis of live cents per pound for tho animal fed. This feed for October and November should be corn meal, mixed with wa fer to the consistency of a thick soup, —The Alabama Legislature has appointed a eommittee to inquire in -0) the expediency of donating acres of public land to each confed erate soldier who, by reasons of wounds received in the late war, is jeuwpaeifttwl fr«w labor.
