TITOS. ROBINSON, Chairman. AGRICULTURAL ELECTION.—The an nual election of officers of the Uutler I County Agricultural Society took place in ! the Arbitration room in Butler, on Tues day the 28th of March. tjonnectleii* nil Bljlii ! She has elected Buckingham, Repub lican, for Governor by a large majority.— Recent operations in front of Richmond have been unfavorable to the Democracy. Haj"' The attention of our readers is in vited to the valuable farm offered for sale by Charles McCaudless Ki(|. See his ad vertisement in another column. It is cer tainly a rare opportunity to make a good investment. gfaT" Court is still in session, last week most of the Commonwealth matters were settled, so far this week, it has been en gaged in arguments Sc. To-day the case | John McPivot eml, vs Win. Logue is be j ing tried. The issue seems to be as to the velidity of the will of John Loguc dee'd, : wc will report the result next week. HaT In tikdays paper will be found the advertisement of Mrs. Ilertsberger who j has opened up a new Milinary and Dress j making shop. Wo would reemiiniend our readers to give her a call beforo deal ing elsewhere. We have no <l.>l4'>t she i will get a liberal shaie of the patronage of our fashionable ladies. Jay Our neighbor, Harvey Colbert Esi|. has been Notary Pub lic, by Gov Curtin. Ilis appointment will of course bo very satisfactory to the! business public, as it is an assurance that the business coming under his official su | pervision will be promptly attended to. — No better appointment could have been made. tW On the Receipt ol' the first dis patch on Monday evening announcing j tlio capture of Richmond, our people be-! came jubilant. On the reading of the dispatch in court by Gen. I'urviancc, ii was moved that the court adjourn. His ; honor Judge McGuflin, thereupon ad journed the court for the evening, at dark j the martial and brass bands plaid—bells were rung and every demonstration oi joy possibly was made, by the excited throng. COM.UI I* tTIONS. For tht AmerlcnuCltiMß. Mil. BDITOR:—Again in the still hour ' of the night, whilst perhaps other minds i are enjoying the sweets of Morpheus—it being the only spare time we have— -vie j (tend forth cur production with our pray- j ers on the temperance question. And af j tcrall, perhap«, some of*the most refined j may criticise, so mote it bo. liut fearless j of censure, we are willing to stand out boldly on our own responsibility, and pro- | claim to the world and the rest of man kind, that intemperance is an evil—and only evil—and evil continually; and the word of God stands out plainly and says : " Wine is mocker, and strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived there by, is not wise."' And si ill crowned heads of the world, and men in high pla ces, in our own loved land, are found to ! be much dissipated, and given to this do. basing habit of tampering with liquors ; which the word of God denounces more | clear and explicit than any other henious > sin in holy writ A broad assersion ; but ' lam broad enough to stand over it; but ' I leave Bible Temperance to the pulpit, j for the present, and go into actual scenes i that arc transpiiing around us every day. ' all over our land. The victims of this j vice arc multiplying. Who draws the dagger to murder his friend ? drunkards. What fills our jails? drunkards; our ponds ami ourrivers with suicides ? What loads down our farmers with taxes? Ask your worthy judge what makes about three-fourths of the cases of his Court? lie will answer, drunkennoss ! And still our good judge will grant license to sell (ilis destroying liquid-fire ; ami why, does he think it right ? perhaps not. but the State Law says it is right, and lie obeys. And now fellow citizens of Butler Co., we have a say in this matter; wc help to make those laws, and if State havs arc obuoxious—assouierealy arc —let us tbem now. Says one: " This man is writing politics. Call it what you please, let us vote only for men to represent us that will legislate against whiskey; and if the landlords can't keep tavern without selling liquor, let them all run for office ; until they spend what money they have made destroying our neighbors, and then goto work hoeing corn—or some other de cent business. It is now time that every man with the least teuiperence proclivi ties, would arouse and shake themselves from the lethargy that, binds them ; don't be over nice, and for fear of iusulting some one, let your friends silently drop off into destructioi) jjjd rftiß. (Jo tfll {hem to cease a practice which is leading down to death, never sign your name to a peti tion for license—any community is better without it. Touch not —taste not—han dle not yourself—-and adviso others to do likewise. But I must express my sorrow while dwelling upon this, that there are still so many prominentcharactersin our •hurdl es, 1110 are engaged in the pernicious practice of tampering with whiskey—ev-> en to selling and drinking, and but too many who would paralize our efforts by spiritless forebodings of disappointment. Nor are those chilling prophesies of de j feat heard from the lovers of Bachus on ly—some of thes 1 worldly wiso and won | drous prudent men, are temperate meu themselve, who from a kind of oold blood ed, selfish singularity, stand aloft from ev erything like public enterprise—and like tlio heartless Levite—pass by on theotbj er side. Nor will they lend their aid to the exertions that nra now made for the benefit of mankind. Let these temper once men alone. Say they: "They will soon grow tired of it, and iu a few years more, you will hear nothing more of their speeches and societies"—and what does this amount to? It amounts to this, that there is not a sufficient degree of firmness in the hearts of' the sons and daughters of" Columbia, to resist the enemy—intein perence. Why sir, such a declaration founded on f'iot, would tarnish the glory j of tlio American character, and rank us amcngst the lowest nations of the earth. Why sir, 1 feel disposed to deny the as | sersiou, and rest the issue upon time and I experience. | * I). M. IIAHHAUUII, « %IT I»KI*AIM\«I:vr. PROVOST MARSHAL <!KN'« OFFICE, WASHINGTON.
