s:he iraonev's grpartmcat, Docs it pay ? Many of our farm-1 era say that it docs not. But why . should it not ? Fifty years ago far- I mors thought it did pay, and sinee | then the value of some kinds of stock has been doubled, and that without the cost being increased. 1 alwavs raised all the calves born on mv place, and have bought sever al at a slight advance ori butcher's prices. By stock-raising I do not wish to be understood as meaning th» exclu sive rearing of stock and neglect of other branches of farming. I mean I to say that farmers ought to raise more stock than they do ; calves can j be had low and seldom lower than } now ; don't mind the butchers when ! they say you never can make more ; jjn a calf than you can at four weeks old ; it is to their interest to say so. I know a butcher who, while lie tells his customers tins, yet, whenever he comes across a line calf, he buys it to hill (some time,) but it (iml> its way into his field. To my certain knowl edge he has now ten spring calves, nearly all of one age, running about his farm, all of which were bought to kill (some time.) I believe it does pay, and have ar- ! rived at this conclusion by experi ence. But if you raise them, let it be done well. Don't make steers, oxen or cows as wild ns any deer ; better leave it alone. Although some calves arc by natural disposition wore wild, yet by proper treatment this w ild-j ness, or more properly this timidity., limy be conquered before the calf is four weeks old. Any one who has read the ngricul-! tural columns of the Telegraph fori the last half a dozen years, will have j no trouble in selecting a plan to j bring them to the age of six weeks. ; This is the most important era iri the : education of the calf, and habits i then acquired arc too often lasting.! Patience, good nature and kinkness ; are absolutely nee< ssary to raise a : calf as it should be done. Tho. e j who do not control these properties, are those who will find that stock raising don't pay. Always learn a calf to allow itself to be handled all over ; while feed ing, is a good time to put this in practice. I know of no other way of mak ing a quiet animal than to turn it over to the boys, and let them put ii in a single harness or yoke two to- : gether (whether they be male or fe-1 male,) and play with them as they | fice tit. But lot the calves do what ] they may, don't let them be abus-I cd. Too mnnv of our farmers neglect | to provide themselves with good home-raised oxen, but are content j with half-broken, runaway steers. j Home who have no boys, will say j they have not time to break them. 1 will give such a plan whereby little! or no time is lost in breaking—so called and often too truly. liaise the calf in the manner which I have mentioned, and by occasional handling and yuking keep them quiet until three or three and a half years old, then yoke thcra and put them behink a pair of quiet oxen, to plj>\v or cart. Don't load too heavily, but allow them to have their own way for a while ; if they are as quiet as they should be, they will not do any mischief, and the old yoke of oxen will pull the load and keep the others straight. Soon the young steer will begin to pull with the others, and the load may be increased. Learn them to back without the cart, then with the cart, but down hill; then up hill, then v ith the load. When hacking, always make them hold their heads up ; one half our oxen spoil their ! backing by holding their noses on or I near the ground. When trying to j make an ox back a heavy load, never I hit or whip him about the head ; it i only makes him put his head down ! to the ground, liir him on the shins j —one or two light strokes on the | shins will do more good in backing Oxen (whether old or young.) than twenty about the head. A yoke of oxen should be used as carefully as a pair of horses ;. it will pay, and save breath. Most people have an idea that any body can drive and work with a pair of oxen, but I would much rather trust an awkward hand with a pair of mules than n pair of we'l-troined ox en ; fori know that the mules, if abused, will take care of themselves, : , while the oxen will bear it all patient-! ty- . . r If care is taken in their education, ] n yoke of good oxen may be so train- J ed that they will walk as fast as a \ common pair of horses,' and do as much plowing on less expensive feed. When partially "broken'' (or trained) it is a very good idea to work them behind a quiet horse, or a yoke of j fast-walking oxen. But do not put them with a yoke of old oxen, who drag themselves along as if life was 1 a heavy burden to them.— German- ' town Telegraph. $55"" An editor, having read in an other piper that there is a tobacco which, if a man smokes or chews, will make hiui forget that he owes a shil- » ling in the world, innocently conclu ded that many of his subscribers have been furnished with the article. c —Pleasant wear he just now.
