(FERRYBOAT I HIGH AND DRY Tlie ferry boat, whioli wad fro/.ou fast in the ice, by dint of the hardest ki&d of work that covered several days, is at last in a position of relative safety. W. A. Shepperson, who had ihe contract for the boat's, removal pronounces the job one of the hardest that he ever nudertook. The jerry, which is the largest iu this section, weighs at least 30 tons and after cut ting it loose from the ice the tug of war really began. Iu bringing the boat op to its present position it had to be raised some eight or ten feet and carried over a heavy ridge of ice cubes deposited below the river bank by the last flood. Two large orabs were em ployed, each manned by four men. Programs was slow, induori, several davs iu all being occupied in the work. The hig boat is Htill sumo eight feet below the level of Water street aud its timber* are badly bent and twisted by reason of the slanting nature of the sarface it rests np ou. The ferry boat is eighteen feet wide anil Mr. Shep persou says he was not permitted to raise the craft op ou top of the river bank, as it would have obstructed Front street. Hh regards the boat a« perfectly safe iu its pre.-ent position and says that it can very easily be tak en caro of when tlie ice moves. It is worth a strong eltort to pre serve the boat, as the annual break-op is nearly dac t after which it is hardly likely that the river will agaiu close with ice. The ferry can soon go into commiFsion again and it will no doobt have a career of usefulness ooxeriug a couple of months at least pendiug the final completion of the bridge. Funeral of Mr?. Sanders, The fnueral of Mrs. Sarah Sanders took plaoe Saturday afternoon at 2 o'olook from the family residence Front street. The Rev. James Hutch* isou, pastor of the Mahoning Presby terian church coudacted tho services. Tbe pall bearers were: Willam Keen er, John Freeze, Setli Freeze and Hen ry Confer. lutermeut was made iu the Odd Fallows 1 cemetery. The dete!»sed was the seoond wife of Thomas Sauderj. The mother of Harry Sanders of California, Miss Jennie Sauders of Scrautou aud Mrs. DeMott of this city, died 19 years ago. Many Enjoyed the Feast. Engeue Mover formally opened his hotel, D. L. & W. avenue last night. It was a brilliant affair. The dining room was appropriately arranged for the occasion. Vases filled with pretty aud fragrant carnations, give lustre to the scene. Tho sapper consisted of chicken and potato salad, chicken and ham sand wiohep, cofTeo and other palat able viands too numerous to meutiou. Hundreds enjoyed the feast. Bridge Contract Awarded. Nearly all the lioge 112 iron brackets are in position and it , wonld seem that the opper side of the bridge might be made ready for foot I passengers in the coarse of a coaple of i weeks. Daring an interview with Commit sioners' Clerk Horaoe 0. Bine yester day it was learned that the Board hae already given the matter some thought and that if it proves at all prautioable foot passengers will be be given per i mission to oross before the bridge ia wholly completed, i Engineer Leonard, who has the con straotiou in charge, when in town the othar day was consulted on the mat i ler. He was favorably inolined to ward the proposition.bat thongbt that the contractors might ask to be re leased fro in all liability for injury sustained by persons crossing while the work is in progress. At the same time lie was not prepared to aay whether with coustraotion at its pres ent stage a person on the sidewalk wonld be exposed to much or any dan ger. He felt snre only that the con tractors, who are responsible for oas aalties, woald not want to assume • any risks in the premises. The matter opto the prosent has been barely more than talked of. At the same time, if some arrangements, can be made whereby persons crossing do so at their own risk it does not seem oat of the question that the bridge may be thrown open to pedes trians in the very near fatnre. No Building Boom In Sight. The faot seems pretty well establisb ed that Danville will not enjoy a building boom the ooming spring. The several contractors see plenty of work ahead in the form of remodeling houses and the making of the usual spring re pairs. Merchant Tailor, E. D. Penta early in the season wilt build a frame dwelling on the lot reoentiy purohas ed by him on East Mahoning street, adjoining the manse of the Mahoning Piesbyterian clioroh. A very flue resi dence to be built by W. H. Lattimere on Front i-treet is among the possibili ties tor the coming season. Beyond these, however.no bailding operations ate in Bight, though it Is very likely that a little later in the season a few new houses will he heard of. Lait year several new buildings went np and it would certainly be odd If with the advantage of two trolley lines and other improvement there wonld not be increased activity in building oirolei this year. Architect J. H. Brugler states that the number of new build-, iug-i planned in any of the neighbor ing towns is uot large. The new build ings decided upon will be mostly dwel lings, of the modern type, bat only moderately expensive. One of tbeaei will be a residence in Berwick to oast some 113,000 to be built by W.F. Low rie, General Manager of the American Oar and Foundry Oompany. Spent Pleasant Day. Mr. and Mrs. J. F.
