Congress, at $8 per day. A little passago at arms, when the arms are wit, badinage, anl repartee, is oacasioDallj a great relief to the lloue, galleries aud lobbies, as it breaks up tbc dull, dry, tedious monotony of stereotyped voting and speaking, aud prevents the faces of all front becoming fixed in ttieir elongation and faluitoas expression. Such a passage took place ou Monday; tbe com batants being Mr. 1'cunington and Mr. Kennet. Mr. K. Lad, on Sal ur Jay, when inter rogatories were propounded to tho candi dates, jocularly proposed to ask them whe ther they believed in a future state, and if so, whether it was a free state or a slave ntatef Mr. P. said, in reply, that be did be lieve in a future state. This he learned from tbe Westminster catechism ; but he did not understand that it was wholly free or wholly slave. He learned from the same source that there were two states di vided by a great gulf, not exactly a com promise lino, the one a state of beati tude, tbe other a very different one ; and as tbc latter was said to have a very hot climate, he thought it must lie south of the line, and as no one was exactly free there, be thought it must be a slate slate; while the other, lying on the other side of this line, the state of beatitude, must be a free state. These remarks excited and called forth continued peals of laugh ter from all parts of the Hall. Mr. P. continued amid roars of laugh ter, and said there was said by some to be a third state, which was called Purgatory, into which be thought, on Saturday, those who were going through a purgation, had fallen ; but as he had never found any thing in his primer about this state, be most confess himself a Know-Nothing. Mr. K. said that on Saturday, the gen tleman bad remarked that he bad got as far as tbe "effectual calling,' (when called upon to answer interrogatories) and be now wished to atsk if he could see "his election sure ?" Renewed laughter. Mr. P. "Many are called, but few chosen." Prolonged merriment. Corres pondence of IlarrUbnrtj Tel-graph. Correctly Pkfised. The Toledo Blade is responsible for the following. While gone, the mother and daughters, with the pious curiosity natural to all the daughters of Ere, began to speculate upon the pro bable religious faith of their visitor. At las, a thought struck one of the girls, that if they colud get a sight of his hymn-book, that would unravel tbe mystery.
