Witmer, and F. A. B yer, instructed for Dr. J. B. Ilowtr. These gentlemen were mostly select ed on the first Lallut, and in every case unanimously concurred in, with entire cordiality. They will be recognized by the citizens of Union county as of a superior order of candidates compared with some that we Lave beca favored with from that tectum when wo were united across the ridge pole at Xcw Berlin. It has indeed been disparagingly eaid by Anti-DivUion-ists, that Snyder coun'y bad not smart men enough to keep up a county organiza tion ; but one thing is very certain, and that is, they have lirst-rate men for officers. The Beavers and Chapman have secured the lion's share ; Wa?hington and Selins grove are moderately served ; Middlcburg (like Lcwisrmrg and for similar reasons) has no candidate ; and the border town fhips, (Middleereek, Jackson and Union,) fare even worse in Snyder than they do in Union, for they Lave not a binglo nfficc Iiamed. )ne thing struck us very favorally the Belectioa of such men as Neb, Mipiiles wautu, Francis A. Boyer, and Henky W. Snyder fur the office of Auditor. The importance of that office is generally much underrated ; its acceptance by men of the reputation, the ag?, and the qualifications of those named, is a happy omen, and in fliis respect Suydcr has set a good exam ple to her twin-sister Union. A Whig Standiug Comiuittco for Sny der county for the year ensuing, was ap pointed, to rrgmiizo by the appointment of their own Chairman and Secretary. The Convention passed a resolution, jdedging themselves and the caudidates to vote fur the candidates this day Eclcctcd, wiiLout reference to any subsequent nomi nations or arrangements. A resolution proposcd,requiriu2 the candidate to pledge themselves against receiving the nomina tion of any other organization, was not acted upon. The Convention then ad journed. The gentleman who took wo from New Berlin to Middlccrcck, claims more territory, and as good land, for Snyder as fur Union ; we tuiLk, however, from the superiority of population, that we have tLo best, and can 6how better crops, espe cially of corn. Moyeu's ITotel, Freelurg, Sept. 1S.1S55. J This quiet and flourishing valley seems unsurpassed ilk beauty, thrift, and fertili ty by any in the State ; and Fneburg, its Lustiness mart, is a reficx of its prosperity. Several buildings, are in course of erection here. The citizens still claim the best lo cation for the county seat ; and that they will bo in the field until election ; but were cither of the other sites out of the way they confess their chance would be better. The sickness at Lcwishurg, I find by conversation with gentlemen from all parts .oi c nion ana snytier, as well as from ad- laccnt portions of NortLumbcrlaiid and Juniata, is nothing peculiar. Other local ities, in ours end adjacent counties, I think from the accounts of persons there located, are more afflicted than w are. In town and country, on the water and on the hills, fevers, ague and dysentery pre vail, to greater or le extent. New Towxsnirs. Preliminary steps are being taken to erect in Snyder connty a new township from Terry to be called "Clay," and an other from the upper part of I'enns and the half of Union in that connty, to be called "Monroe." Representative Conftrencs. The Conferees from Juniata, Snyder, and Union counties, delegated to select a Whig candidate for Representative in the General Assembly of this State for the en suing session, convened (according to the call of the Union County Whig Conven tion in Lcwishurg) at Moyer's Hotel in Freeburg, at 1 1. M. of Tuesday, 18th Sept., 1S55. The Conference was organized by the choice of Hon. JONATHAN J. CUN NINGHAM, of Juniata, for President, and Dr. Henry C. Houiz, of Snyder, fer Secretary. The Conferees presented thoir creden tials, and took their scats, as follows : Jitniofi J. J. Cunningham, James North, Michael Funk. iSnyder Israel Uuteliu9, II. C. Houtz, Daniel Witmer. L'uian Jas. B. Hamlin, John Reber, Johnson Walls, Samuel Weiriek, 0. N. Wordcn. Two sets having appeared from Union (Messrs. Hamlin, Walls and Wordcn, ap pointed at the first Convention, held in Lewisbnrg, 8th inst., and Messrs. Reber and Weiriek from the soeond meeting held at New Berlin, 17th inst.) the Conferees from Juniata and Snyder, after a lengthy hearing of the chim3 of the contestants, decided to admit both, bat to restrict thetn to five votes. Proceeded to nominate a candidate for Representative, when Mr. Funk nominated George W. Strouss, of Juniata county. Mr. Gutelius nominated Dr. J. B. STR0US3, of Jnniata county, having received a majority of all the votes, was thereupon declared duly nominated. The following resolution was then unan imously adopted : Resolved, That in yielding the nomina tion to Juniata county, we do it for one year only, and with the full understanding that this will givo Juniata county no claim to the Representative next year, but that tho Representative be next year con ceded to Union or Snyder :ounty. The Juniata Conferees stated that they regarded the choice of their fellow-citizen as a favor bestowed ; that tbey had not in tended to press his claims ; and that they solemnly and sincerely promised, for them selves and those they rcprccntod, that they would not ask the nomination of a candidate for t) at clEcc another year. The Union Conferees who voted for Mr. Strcuss, disclaimed any personal disrespect for their able and active Whig fellow citi zen who had been brought forward by the other Conferees from that county, nor did they wish to overlook the claims and ser vices of the Snyder county nominee; but, they stated, tho dissensions originating in tho Division contest just closed, and also ! those occasioned by the existing struggles j of five rival candidates for Seats of Jus ' tiee, convinced them that no gentleman, however deserving, could now unito all the tribes of the Whig army of Old Union ! county. For this reason only, they Lad ' decided, upon calm deliberation, to concede I the nominee to Juniata county, for oco j year only, trusting that, as he was an en i tire stranger to our local difficulties, he ! would receive the whole party vote, and i that another year would find the Whigs entirely united in tue two new counties. Resolved that tho proceedings of this meeting be published in all the papers of tho District, friendly to the cause. Ad journed, sine die. Explanation. At the Whig Confer ence in Freeburg, a statement was presen ted from several citizens of this county, of both parties, that no Conferees were cho sen at the Whig meeting in New Berlin on Monday. The gentlemen representing that meeting, claimed that they had been duly appointed, and presented credentials from its Officers. The gentlemen first named, raid particular attention to that point, and were sure no appointment of Conferees was mauo la cpou uieuuug. There is no doubt but they were sincere in their declaration, as Others we have seen were of the same opinion, and wero ready to bo qualified to that effect. Upon inqui ring, at New Berlin, on Wednesday, Low ever, wo are satieficd that the Conferees irt-re appointed, Lut in a hurried manner, at the tpening of the meeting, and that the outsiders who supposed they bad heard all the proceedings, were in this case a few moments too late. Whether the citizens of those States are prepairtd yet for gradual abolition, the only way ia which slavery can ever be exiinguishtd in a State, will depend a great deal upon the discrtioa of the opponents of slrvery ia the free States.
