The pressing nature of Spring work, teems to Lave caused a very r-lim attonJ ncc at Court this week, autl lhe "gift of continuance" was very nianifesi among tbe clients. John Gardner of Selinsgrove was chosen Foreman of the Grand Jury, which how ever had but very few ordinary bills before them, most of which were ignored, and the Jury was discharged on Tuesday. On the 15th inst., on motion of Geo. F. Miller,Ksq., James B. Hamlin, of Lewis burg, was admitted to the liar of Union County. CONTESTING IlIVIION. O.i M mday, Mr.Weirick olTcre J a petition, sismed by several, and fortified by the oath before John Swincford Eq. J jsiice of the lVace," of John M. Bium and others, f,r con testing the Utc Division ccnlest, wherein ihey think such Is the infatuation of mortals ! they were not defeated, (The first petition, sworn to by D. H. R ush and Charley Cawlcy, was got up within ten d lys of the election, bat bein? radically defective. and that fsct be coming known through some -leaky medium, a new petition was made out last week.) It is very lengthy; alleging thai some lOOillegnl votes were polled in I.euisbur for Division, and as many more in White Deer. Kelly, West BatTiloe, Hartley.East Buffaloe, Cnion, Penns, Selinsgrove, Chapman and Washington that the While Deer officers were not sworn that the Cha; man election was not held in the right house that Lewisburg and tielinsgrove improperly influenced elections in some of ths Townships that their cff.'r to pay the iffiACI enrolment tai and lhe transcribing of Ihe necessary records without laia:i. n, was bri- ! Thery that the act was un-con-sti-tu-tion-a! : and intimates various ether weighty reasons yet to be hatched. i Messrs. Weirick arid Slenker claimed to ; present these papers, under the general rules ; for contesting electinns.and to askan overhaul ing of the remains" of the contest. Messrs. Miller and Casey rontended that by the act of 2d March last, the Election must ; be contested as elections "for any County OJfice are contested'' undr existing laws, which is to be by filing a petition within ten Jays afler the election. Mr. Casey argued that this petition not ha-1 Ting been filed within the ten days, was clear ly excluded that the Art was passed, and by : its terms had become a Law. He read the receipt of he late State Treasurer, Joseph Bailey, of $300 from Eli Slifer, in full Tor the Enrolment Tax. When that Tar was paid, no legal protest appearing, the Law was enrolled upon the Statute Book ; since then, valid Subscription! had been made, and legal Bonds taken, in sums amounting to $125,000, for County Seats ( nnder the same Law, our Hon. Judges have convened (in effect sanctioning its enforcement) and desig nated localities as candidates for the Seat of Justice of the two counties; (and the Com- 1 missioners to run the line are entering upon , the performance of their duty.) Thi. effort to prerent Division was therefore too late the funeral was past ! it was dead and buried. ' Judge Wilson ordered the filing of the fact of the presentation of the petition, but took no further action upon it at that lime. On Wed nesday he announced that he would give lhe contestants a chance to prove their charges, i The allegation that there were 100 un lawful votes polled in this Borough, is infa mously false, and if there is law to punish men for rash swearing, it should be invoked in this case. The crime with which our fel low citizens are charged, if proved, subjects them to punishment, and degrades them as men and as voters. Knowing that the re urns would be closely scrutinized, every pains was taken to avoid even questionable Votes being cast in Lewisburg. IVew Berlmers allowed us 500 majority, yet we fell 16 short of it, and now they put upon record that we returned near 100 fridulent votes ! This charge is not made under excitement or haste, but cooly and deliberately.
