LEWISBUKG CHRONICLE & 1 WEST BRANCH FARMER. T Fan with a Judge. The Chronicle of the 15th "tout., has a notice of the charge of Hon. Jambs M. l'oRTMi, to tbe Grand Jury of Wayne county, supposed to squint with both eyes rigutr-mrid the Know Nothings. Now is it happened that, during tbe Anti-Ma-eouic tr of 1S3G, Judgu 1'oitTKa was one of the very men who " Knew Nothing" of the secrets of Masosrj when he was rorruircd to. testify in relatiou thereto, so tirriuy of the Grand Jury he addressed in 1 S3 1 were "Know Nothings," and had , nothiny ciyin I he American party ditiply, no I'rcfciitiurnt appeared, and the I " ih;.rg" was a decided water-haul. But , . . the Iioneda!o Democrat, not having the fear of snvtLin? before its eves, and beine-1 , . . , . g moved and instigated thereto by the fun of the thine, cot up itinmustj indictment to meet the ease, a few (section, of which WC copy, as follows : "And the Inqu St aforesaid, do further . ti... :j v .i presi-ui, a uab uic nam iv:um .uilliugs, j comhiutn, cutKpiriu, and confederating, as aforesnid, in tbe vear ISM, comnicnced ) their attack upon the venerable usages of tbe said democratic party, ana by virtue of said conspiracy and by all their dark ia MuiuUa wiles, did JjluJe tbe people and cause tbe defeat of a most worthy demo crat who had been regularly nominated as President Judge. Aud iu 1S51, in pur suance ofsaid conspiracy, did defeat the said William Iiiglur of his office of Gover nor, and did defeat all the worthy nomi nees of the democratic party ic the county of Wayne. And it is currently reported auu uciieveu iiiai im iiiieuu, iii me name and under tbe guise of Auicriemism, to turn out of office all foreigner, and to put in their places American citizens, and to oveiturn Kopery and such like supersti tions and establish l'rotestauism and civi lization in their stead, and to cause tint the laws for naturalization be amended and tho time for becoming cilizens be ex tended. All of which said actings, doings, plotting, and conspirings are most mtni festly to tbe contempt of the constitution, toe great and sore allliction of the demo cratic party, and so to be denounced, pre sented, and tnost condigtily punished. And the Iiiq'icst aforesaid do further present that said Know Nothings, holding thesen'imcnta aforosaid.are justly exposed to condign punishment, and, if there were not so many of tbeut, ourlit to be banished by the Honorable Court to Botany Hay, or the State of New York, or any place where they could not endanger the peace and har mony of the democratic pirty of Wayne comity, or defeat regular nominations. A:id so the luq leat do present these said i K'uw Nothing', in conformity to tbe rules of Iiir aud Politic-, as a pest, a plague, a political nuisance, to be abated at the bal lot box ; if not, then we must leave them to the disposal of tbe Honorable Court." UtiIy last jear.this Ja?. M. Porter was elected to his office by a league with vari ous parties, over the regular nominee of the Democracy ! If the old Judge don't laugh in his sleeve when he reflects upon Lis position in 1?30, 1?53, and 1554, then c lelievo he has no music in him. w. Anecdote.
