about 12 years, who was assisting in saw
ing lath at the steam saw mill, carelessly
suffered Lis hands to come in contact with
the saw, Wednesday last, lacerating them
severely and catting off two fingers.

from yellow fever, in Xew Orleans, during
the week ending July 23d; so says the
Jiulktm. The epidemic evidently prevails
to a very unusual extent. The principal
towns on the lower Mississippi have estab
lished tiarantiue regulations for all ves
sels from below.

An address will be delivered to the So
ciety by Prof. Bliss.
SrRev. C. A. Hewitt, late of Milton,
Pa., Las become pastor of the Baptist
Church in Whitewater, Walworth county,
Wis. llev. Geo. I. Miles ha removed
from Philadelphia to Milesburg. Mr. John
H. Castle Las received a pastoral call to
the Iiaptist church in Potfsvillc, and Mr.
W. Barnhurst to Chesnut Hill, Pa. The
two latter were of the first class of stu
dents of the University at Lcwibburg.
JS?" Wc understand that the entire ar
ray of grand and traverse jurors, empan
elled for the August term of the North
umberland County Court, was quashed by
the Court on Tuesday last, on account of
a fatal defect in the venire under which
they were drawn. The Court then ad
journed until the November term, without
transacting any business requiring the aid
of cither of these juries. No bills of in
dictment were acted upon by the Grand
Jury.
James Brass was granted a new trial.
&3 The members of the Democratic
State Convention re-assembled at Harris
burg, on Thursday of last week, and nom
inated Hon. John C. Knox, as the candi
date of their party for Judge of the Su
preme Court. Judge Knox now holds
the post for which he Las been nominated,
by appointment from Governor Biglcr.
The vacancy in the Supreme Court Bench,
it will be recollected, was occasioned by
the death of Judge Gibson.
The Siientic American states, on reli
able authority, that "if at two feet above
the throat of your chimney, you enlarge
the opening to double size, for the space
of two feet, then carry up the rest as at
first, your chimney will never smoke."
Ashland for Sale. The farm of the
late Henry Clay (as well as Lis birth place
in Virginia) is advertised in the Lexington
Observer for sale. It .contains 330 acres
of the best land in Fayette county, Va.
The Commissioners of Luzerne county
have offered the enormous reward of one
hundred dollars for the apprehension and
conviction of Quinn, the murderer of Ma-
Lala Wiggins, on a canal boat.
The newspapers have broached the sub
ject of erecting a monument to Benjamin
Franklin the necessary amount to be
made up by collections among the printers
in the United States.
Tho WLigs of Chester ' county in gene
ral meeting, Lave expressed their opinion
against the poliry of county subscriptions
to railroad and other corporations.
A special Police of 30 persons has been
appointed by the Borough authorities of
Danville, to act when occasion may re
quire their services.
Col. John W. Maynard 13 nominated
for Assembly by the friends of Prohibition
in Lycoming county.

The Lebanon Advertiser says that mncb
damage was done to the growing corn,
fences, Slc, in the northern part of that
county, by the storm on Thursday week.
Three cows belonging to Jacob Stoffer
were killed by lightning. Tho storm was
accompanied by hail, which laid flat the
standing crops, and battered in a great
many window glass.
The death of Thomas P. Moore, once
Member of Congress from Kentucky, and
Minister to Colombia during President
Jackson's administration, is announced in
the " l'lougUboy," of Ilarrodsburg, Ky.
lie died of paralysis, on the 21st ult.
By advices from Santa Fe, wc learn that
Don Ambrosia Amiijo (a fcativo of the
Territory) is a candidate for Delegate to
Congress, and also Got. Lano and one or
two others, who all run independent of
