Not CuAaED. Rev. Sir. Co.nser re cently handed us a corn-stalk, firmly at tached to the end of a root of which was a good sized Potatoe. There was no mis take that the root of the corn was firmly imbedded in the potatoe. Here was a more wonderful process than the supposed transmutation of Chess into Wheat. But, by cutting open the potatoe, we found that it was the root of the corn which had forced itself into the potatoe, or which the potatoe bad grown around, the root having passed out again about an inch from where it entered. Muxcy, Oct. 18. On Saturday even uiug, a most shocking accident occurred in Clinton township, Lycoming county, about two miles from this place, which ter minated the existence of one of our best and most worthy aud respected farm ers. It appears that Mr. Joseph Davis, his brother Thomas, and a nephew went to the woods at the foot of the Bald Eagle mountain in the immediate vicinity of their farm, having been attracted bythebarkiug of their dog, and finding a racoon upon a large tree, Joseph proceeded to cut the tree down, Thomas aud the young man having charge of the dogs, remaining a short dietauce off. As the tree fell, it struck a lare dead hemlock without any limbs, some three feet iu diameter, which broke off near the ground and falling back struck Joseph and literally crushed him to atoms, leaving scarcely a remnant of a human frame. Kvery bone in his body, saving one hand and the fore-arm and the two feet and lower part cf the legs, were broken, and crushed to pieces. The heart, together with some of the other intestines, wens forced from the body, aud found some three feet distant. The accident is almost without a parallel and is deeply regretted by bis numerous friends and acquaintances. Mr. Davis' nge was about 60 years. Williamsport, Oct. 20. About 10 o'clock last the stable of Mr. A. Winegar den was discovered to be on lire, and before the fiauics could ba arroatad, tk. oi.U mJ other outbuildings of Mr. It. Faries were totally destroyed. A fine horse, the prop erty of Mr. Wincgarden, perished in the! flames. Some forty new stoves belonging to Mr. Grafius were so much injured as to be unfit for use. Mr. Levi Ilartman also lost some two hundred dollars' worth of tools, &c. The whole loss of personal property is unknown. It was evidently the work of an incendiary. McTThe barn, with the autumn's crop of John Wolfe, in East Buffalo Tp., about two miles from Lcnisburg, was burnt on Saturday afternoon last. The origin of the fire is unknown. There was insurance of $1100. 9STlt is currently reported that Hon. Horace Mass will accept the Presidency of " Antioch College," the new College of the Christian denomination, in Ohio, tt will be very fortunate in securing the labor of such a man. co CO e9 2 oo io b a e 'j2 3- S2 I ' 1 1 J, I I tft -n tS ej n ii ca cjao r- o 8S c 2 T, e ee w t-2 r- o 2 S3 SS S e- on r o j-i- gg 9 no' tin S o "e'2 e5 53 -e6 ox ot S3 5 SS orta erf g2 ess e 5 a CM o - a ' ej 5 r-ss -w- 2 t" ass as oa . .mt . ml , as on Ct o S - f gj " e ' . o cs. it o e I o rs . - 1 a? o g.5 I I m -- m c S r 9 m -e e -o aci r. 5s.
