JU LEWISBUKG CHRONICLE & WEST BRANCH FARMER. , ! Hi' i IV " t - . i - I;'!' 3 S Terrible Steamboat Disaster. The Steamer llmry Ct.y was burnt on the North River, between New York and Albany, on Thursday weak. She contain- ed some thru passenger,, e.outt , of .whom perichvd by drowning and other- wise. The particulars furnish the niostj melancholy picture of loss of life and pro-' pcrty that we have ever read. When the occurrence took place, the JLnrjf Clay was racing with the Armenia, and bad the steam up to the highest point. The passengers reinoustrated, but were told that there was no danger. The whole blame is credited to the Captain and crew, and properly. The gallows is too good a place for such men, and the survivors of them should be dealt with in the severest manner. Among those lost arc Stephen Allen, aged 84, uuee Mayor of New York ; Abra Lain Christ, an eminent Lawyer of Brook lyn ; Jlr. Downing, the distinguished horticulturist ; J. J. Speed, proposed as the Whig candidate for Governor of Ma ryland ; the wife of Mr. Barcroft, of the firm of Barcroft & Beaver, l'hilad. ; wife of John L. Thompson, Esq., of Lancaster, end some 70 or SO others, many of them deservedly beloved in their own circle, and hose loss is deeply felt in many commu nities. The Fishery Question. Boston, July '24. IJythe steamer Ad miral wc Lave St. John (New Brunswick,) papers to the 231 July. The New Bnmswicker of the 22J says that the United States Government will mate an attempt to obtain a modification of the strict kttr of the Fishery Tretty, liut failing in that, they will then offer as an equivalent, reciprocity in'ccrtain articles of domestic growth. The New Bruns wicker thinks that the American govern ment will make a great noise about the rigid enforcement of the Fishery Treaty, lut they feel confident it will not frighten 1 John Bull out of his present position. The St. John's Morning News says that serious troubles between the two govern ments are anticipated, consequent upon the strict interpretation of the fishing treaty, by Earl Derby's government. is not at all improbable, the News thinks, (hat the determination of the British Min-1 istry to enforce the treaty has been con ceived with a view to the success of the negotiation for reciprocal Free Trade. Nearly C00 Officers and Soldiers of the War of 1S12 were in attendance, and their cnthu siaeiu for their old leader, Gen. Seott, is said to be unbounded.
