T. LEWISBURG CHRONICLE & WEST BRANCH FARMER. w Old Time Winters. In 1664 the oold was so intense that the Thames waa covered with ice sixty-one inches thick. Almost ail the birds per ished. In 1692 the eold waa to excessive, that the famished wolves entered Vienna, and attacked beasts and even men. Many; people in Germany were frozen to death in 1695, and 1639 was nearly as bad. In 1709 occurred that famous winter called, by distinction, the cold winter. the rivers and laics were frozen, nnd ever, the tea for several miles from the shore. The ground was frozen nine feet deep. Birds and besets were struck dead in the fields, and men perished by thousands in their houses. In the south cf France the wine plantations were almost destroyed, nor have they yet recovered that fatal dis aster. The Adriatic Sea was frf.ztn, and even the Mediterranean about Genoa; and the citron and orange groves suffered ex tremely in the finest parts cf Italy. In 1716 the winter wns so intense that people traveled across the Straits from Co penhagen to the province of Seuia. in Swe den. In 172G, in Scotland, multitude s of cat tie and sheep were buried iu the snow. In 1740 the winter was scarcely inffri crio.uaiu- iivj. iurjw deep in Spain and "Portugal. In Liiglatid, the strong est ale, exposed to the air in a glass, w: covered with ice one-eighth of uu iueii thick. Iu 1771 the Elbe was frozen to the Lor toni. In 1776 the Danube bore iec Cve fett deep below Vicnnx Vast uumbrrs of the feathered and finny tribe perched. The wiiittrs cf 1774 and 1775 were un commonly severe. The Little licit a frozeu over. From 1809 to 1812 also, the winter. were remarkably cold, purtkulrrly the lat ter, in Russia, which proved so distrous to the French army. Woman's Rights. David Hale, late editor ot the Journal of Commerce, once wrote a jcu d'eprit on i the " Rights of Women." in which he i showed that the balance of wrongs was decidedly on the side of the men. " When the simple question of superiority is at issue, the men always have to givo up. If ladies and gentlemen meet on the side walk, whn hag to turn out?
