THE DAILY COLLEGIAN leers put out flames Senior gets hat trick By Anthony Barton COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER After 40 minutes of what coach Scott Balboni called unin spired hockey, the Penn State Icers came out strong in the third I eriod, defeating the Liberty Flames ICERS 7-3 Thursday night at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion Trailing 3-2 heading into the Penn State final period, the leers (7-I)4t, scored five con secutive goals including a hat Liberty trick by senior forward Tim O'Brien to get the win. "I don't think we hit the panic button after the first two periods we had, which was a good thing," O'Brien said. "It was just a little mental change. Going down 3-2 heading into the third, you're always going to have that extra oomph in your step and I think it paid dividends for us." Before the third period, Liberty's persistence and ability to respond proved to be a theme of the game. The Flames (6-5) capitalized on Icers' mistakes on their way to taking the lead mid way through the second. After Icers' goalie Teddy Hume stopped an initial break away chance, Penn State was unable to clear the zone, leading to a goal by Flames forward Greg Jensen to tie the game at two. Shortly thereafter, Flames for ward Tom Charlton intercepted a bad clearing attempt and fired a shot past Hume for a 3-2 lead. See ICERS, Page 18. Wakefield a solid recipient After a tough season, it is only fitting Tim Wakefield won the Roberto Clemente Award Thursday. Wakefield has been in limbo between a job in the starting rotation and the bullpen for the Boston Red Sox for years, and this season he put up a 4-10 record with a 5.32 ERA in what could be his second to last season in Boston. Wakefield's 2010 campaign, his 16th with Boston, may have been subpar by any pitcher's standards, but his "Pitching in for Kids" foundation has benefitted New England children for years. The recognition is deserved, especially at such a low point in Wakefield's career.
