10 I Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010 By Brendan Monahan COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER In Penn State’s three losses this season, freshman quarterback Rob Bolden has been pressured for time to throw while playing under center and in the shotgun formation. While the shotgun should give a quarterback more time to throw in distancing him five yards from the line of scrim mage. Bolden's completion per centages have not differed much between the two formations. The best conclusion shows pressure and blitz packages from Alabama. lowa and Illinois and the Penn State offensive line’s inabili ty to protect have made the shot gun. and the added time it gives. \ iiluallv irrelevant. Behind center Bolden operating behind center has seen an opposing, up-and down trend. The freshman completed 33 percent of his passes behind cen ter in Alabama, 54 percent in lowa and 42 percent against Illinois In all but one case, the statistics show the more Bolden throws, the higher his percentage becomes. Bolden presumably gets into a better rhythm the more he throws the ball. Bolden's only touchdown in the three losses was an 80-yard pass to wide receiver Derek Move in the second quarter against Illinois Bolden operated behind center on that play. To further cloud the difference or lack thereof between Bolden operating from the shot pun and behind center, two inter ceptions came when Bolden was behind center and two intercep tions came from the shotgun in I 2 T 4 5 i\suc issues issues issues issues , - f 80.50 $4 50 512.50 515.50 51X.50 53.00 Bon IT 15 1 1. 3(1 TO 45 24.00 4.15 '!( 0.50 14 80 20.10 25.40 30.70 5.30 on l ■'.45 235)0 30.35 30.80 0.45 2O 10 27.70 35.30 42.90 7.60 i .50 265 3SO 4.05 6.10 1.! 5 Collegian Inc. reserves the right to reject, reclassify or revise any ad to conform to established policies. Bolden struggling for time in the pocket those three double-digit losses. Bolden was hit on three of his four interceptions and generally forced throws under pressure something usually seen from an inexperienced quarterback instead of taking the sack or throwing the ball away. Bolden has attempted 15 more throws from behind center. The Lions could be more unpre dictable if there was balance between the two formations. Shotgun Bolden has felt the pressure this season. Though keeping opponents to five sacks, the Penn State offen sive line generally hasn’t given Bolden much time to throw. In the Nittany Lions’ three loss es this season, Bolden completed 50 percent of his passes from the shotgun, only five percent better than his 45-percent completion percentage behind center in those three games. From the shotgun, Bolden's completion percentage has steadi ly declined throughout the losses. The offensive line isn’t always to blame. Dropped balls and errant passes also played into the equa tion, but the shotgun didn’t neces sarily translate into less pressure. For example, Bolden’s lone interception in the Illinois loss came from the shotgun, when right tackle Chima Okoli missed a block, causing Bolden to force his throw. The Lions' 3rd-and-goal after starting from the Illinois nine-yard line in the second quarter also came from the shotgun and result ed in Bolden throwing an incom pletion while being hit.
