Local bluegrass band to play outdoor show By Hannah Rlshel COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER In addition to sleeping in and catching up on homework on Labor Day, Penn State students have the opportunity to enjoy a free bluegrass concert. The Allegheny Ridgerunners, a State College bluegrass band, will perform at Acoustic Brew’s Labor Day concert. The show begins at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6 at the Lemont Village Green, 123 Mt. Nittany Rd., about three miles from Penn State. The Lemont Village Green is located behind the Center for Well Being. “We chose the Allegheny Ridgerunners because they are some hot bluegrass play ers,” said Mel DeYoung, a board member for Acoustic Brew and coordinator for WPSU’s Fblk Show. “Kurt Kroker, who plays fiddle, is amazing. He’s going'to be something some day.” The other members of the group were solid performers as well, he said. The Allegheny Ridgerunners, which formed in 2009, is comprised of experienced musicians with a wide variety of musical back grounds. The band —which draws-inspiration from the old-style bluegrass of the Stanley Brothers and Bill Monroe, as well as contem porary acoustic influences uses lots of fid dle and banjo, with three voices harmonizing around a single microphone, according to the band’s MySpace page. DeYoung said the Allegheny Ridgerunners offer a traditional bluegrass sound. “Bill Monroe defined what bluegrass is,” he said. “If it sounds like Bill then it’s definitely bluegrass, but some bands offer variations, like ‘newgrass.’” Bluegrass music is a sub-genre of folk music, which is acoustic and “rootsy,” DeYoung said. “If it’s bluegrass, it’s folk, but it’s folk it isn’t necessarily bluegrass,” he said. A potluck will be held prior to the Allegheny Ridgerunners concert at 3 p.m. at the Lemont Village Green. A jam session will follow the performance, open to musicians of any skill level. “If people haven’t played bluegrass this gives them an opportunity to try it,” Grigor said. The show’s rain location is the Granary, located next to the Center of Well Being and the Lemont Village Green.
