Local store holds Christmas sale By Kathleen Loughran COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER The smell of pine and peppermint lingers in the air as boxes wrapped in shiny green and red paper sit under a Christmas tree. It's not a scene typically seen or thought about during July or any other time of the summer. Friday at the Brookline Wmdsong Dining Room, 1930 Cliffside Dr., Brookline Village will provide a place for people to finish all their holiday shopping early. "Everyone should come and check it out," said Liz Plozner, activities director at Brookline Terrace. "You can get all of your holiday shopping done early in one convenient location." Plozner said the sale will feature items such as home made jewelry and purses, home items, beauty supplies and more. Erica Homan will sell her own jewelry at the event, but she said she is most looking forward to talking to the people who come to the sale. "I am really excited about it," she said. "I really enjoy eld erly people, and I like when they come in and you can talk to them and hear their stories." Rebecca Shultz, who owns a store in Bellefonte, is also planning on selling at the event with her cousin. She said she will have "nicer country-store items" such as dish towels, decorative plates and garden flags. This is not the first year the Christmas in July event will be held. The sale was initiated last year as a fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk "For last year's event, we were very successful," Plozner said. "We had close to 10 different vendors that year. We made close to $2,000 for our Memory Walk team." Even though Brookline Village has participated in Relay for Life before, Plozner said they decided to make the switch to a Memory Walk team because they have seen the effects of Alzheimer's disease first hand. "The growing awareness of Alzheimer keeps getting larg er, and we need to find a cure," she said. "One year we par ticipated in Relay for Life, but since we do have a dementia unit we see that it affects a lot of our residents." Phoebe Watson, who participated in last year's event, said she will also sell Longaberger items at this year's sale. like doing events where there is a donation anything for a good cause," Watson said. "I thought it was really nice. The residents were involved it's different than any other event I've been to."
