Students perform, showcase talents By Alexandra Fletcher COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER Even the 'American Idol" judges would have had their work cut out for them Thursday night. "I don't envy the crowd tonight," Michael Crandall said. "Even if you had Simon Cowell here tonight, even he wouldn't have anything negative to say:. Crandall was referring to the final round of the Saudi Arabian Student Association's Penn State's Got Talent, which was held in the HUB-Robeson Cente on Thursday night. One of the judges at Thursday's event was Crandall from the University of Global Programs. - If we've established one thing tonight with absolutely no doubt, it's that Penn State has got talent,' he said. But it was crowd favorite David Clavens (senior-marketing) who won the votes. With 37 votes, the footbag champion took the grand prize. At the beginning of his performance, Clavens told the crowd that because of his constant traveling he didn't have many friends there to vote for him. "Listen I wasn't lying when I said I didn't have a lot of friends out there." Clavens said. " Now I have some new friends you guys." Mike Posner drew in a crowd that filled about 1/3 of the hall, with openers Big Sean and DJ Benzi warming them up. Dave Brozena (junior-history) said he has been a fan of Posner for about a year and has downloaded most of his music. "Not a lot of people know him," Brozena said. "I guess he's pretty underground." Brozena, sporting a red, flat-rimmed hat, likened the initial atmosphere to that of a middle school dance, but was certain it would warm up. He said he was exited to see the rapper and the price didn't hurt either. "I said, what the hell either," Brozena said. Posner started his set by playing the piano and singing in his unique voice his song "Drug Dealer Girl." Posner sang the lyrics "You should be my girlfriend," to the girls in the front row. He followed with a remix of 3oh!3's "Don't Trust Me," and then with his romantic number "First Date Sex," where he sang the eternal lyrics, "I just want to love you, I'm not committed, so take off you Ugg boots and let me hit it." Coming in second place and bringing emotion to the judging table was Acapella singer Eric Farmer (graduate-educational leadership). Farmer, who sung an original song, said he doesn't need an iPod because he almost always has a song in his heart. "I'm sitting here with tears coming down my face," Crandall said after Farmer's per formance. "I want to buy it for my iPod because I don't have that kind of music coming out of my heart when I'm walking down the street." Farmer said the biggest benefit from performing is the new opportunity he has to collaborate with all the other contest ants. Third place was awarded to the newly formed "On the Flip Side, - an ensemble of 12 singers, who are part of the Filipino Association, that performed a variety of popular songs. During a break in the show the Saudi Arabian Student Association presented a documentary that featured Saudi Arabian culture, technology and landscape. Cultural events representative for the group Abudulraham Al-Belushi (senior geosciences) thanked the audience and staff for their support and told the crowd to look out for Penn State's Got Talent in 2011. beats at HUB Pat Capone (junior-accounting) said he hears that Posner is a hitmaker in the mak ing. "It's supposibely acclaimed, a lot of peo ple like him," Capone said. "He's supposi bly the next big thing." Rapper Big Sean hyped up the crowd before welcoming Posner, singing his ode to commercialism with "Desire, Want, Need" rapping "I got goals, I got dreams, I'm infatuated with nice things. I love money" Big Sean said he aspired to be a million aire, and live in a mansion with a girl from Penn State. "I grew up listening to Biggie," Big Sean said, before reciting the lyrics to Notorious BlG's "It's All About the Benjamins" to crowd acclaim. "'F—k the State Penn, f—k hoes at Penn State."' can't beat free The event was attended by an eccentric crowd, including a girl who carried around a sign saying "F—k Me."
