Eagles resign Reed for depth at safety PHILADELPHIA (AP) J.R. Reed is back with the Philadelphia Eagles for his defense more than his return skills. Released after his muffed punt led to a loss at Green Bay in the season opener, Reed re-signed with the Eagles yesterday to provide depth in a banged-up secondary. All-Pro safety Brian Dawkins sus tained a neck stringer in Monday night's 20-12 loss to Washington, and his status for Sunday's game against Detroit is uncertain. Starting free safety Sean Considine briefly left against the Redskins with a knee injury but returned. Reed gives the Eagles four safe ties on the roster. Tackle Pat McCoy was released to make room for Reed. The Eagles also signed tackle Jonathan Palmer to the practice squad and released tight end Lee Vickers. He signed with the Eagles on Sept. 2 after getting cut by the Giants. Reed returned three kickoffs in the opener against the Packers, and was pressed into duty as a punt returner for the first time in his career after Greg Lewis lost a fum ble and looked shaky. Thursday, Sept. 20,2007 I 13 Reed inexplicably tried to make a running catch on a punt in traffic and fumbled it, setting up the win ning field goal. He was cut two days later when the Eagles brought back the sure-handed Reno Mahe. Not long after the second half start ed, Harrison returned to the Steel ers sideline but did not play again. - Harrison was hurt as he was mov ing in to make a tackle, only to be rammed into the back of nose tackle Casey Hampton. Harrison knew quickly that he wasn't seriously hurt, but almost no qne else in the stadi um. Harrison went through a regular practice yesterday and expects to play Sunday against San Francisco. Harrison is starting for the first time in his four NFL seasons, replacing former Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter. Bonds not pleased with fate of No. 756 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Barry Bonds said the man who bought his 756th home run ball and announced plans to let the public decide its fate is an "idiot.'' Fashion designer Marc Ecko had the winning bid Saturday in the online auction for the ball that Bonds hit last month to break Hank Aaron's record of 755 home runs. The final sell ing price was Bonds $752,467. Ecko, 35, has set up a Web site allowing visitors to vote on three options for the ball: give it to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, brand it with an asterisk before sending it to Cooperstown or blast it into space on a rocket ship. Bonds said Ecko could have found a better way to spend three-quarters of a million dollars.
