The Ralph Dorn Hazel Memorial Award, named for Penn State's tenth
president (1926-1947), recognizes a combination of high scholastic
attainment together with good citizenship, and participation and lead
ership in student activities.

The Eric A. Walker Award
The Eric A. Walker Award is presented annually to the student who has
contributed most to enhancing the reputation of the University through
extracurricular activities. Walker was president of tie University from
1956 to 1970.
Kelly A. Mazzante
The John W. Oswald Award
The John W. Oswald Award, established in 1983, annually recognizes
graduating seniors who have provided outstanding leadership in at
least one of several areas of activity at the University. Four awards,
consisting of a medallion honoring John W. Oswald, president of the
University from 1970 to 1983, are presented.

The Milton S. Eisenhower Award
for Distinguished Teaching
The Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching, estab-
lished in 1992, is given in recognition of outstanding teaching at Penn
State. The recipients must be tenured faculty, employed as full-time
member of the faculty fora minimum of five years, and have under
graduate teaching as a major portion of their assignment. Milton S.
Eisenhower was president of Penn State from 1950 to 1956.

The George W. Atherton Award
for Excellence in Teaching
The George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching, named for
the seventh president of the University (18824906), honors excellence
in teaching performance at the undergraduate level. Recipients must
have been full-time members of the faculty for at least three years,
have undergraduate teaching as a major portion of their duties, and
have the rank of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor.

The Penn State Teaching Fellow: The
Alumni/Student Award for Excellence in Teaching
The Penn State Teaching Fellow Award was established jointly in 1985
by the Alumni Association, the Undergraduate Student Government,
and the Graduate Student Association. Its purpose is to honor distin
guished teaching and to provide encouragement and incentive for
teaching excellence at the University. A permanent plaque listing the
Th McKay Donkin Award
The McKay Donkin Award was established in 1969 in
honor of the late McKay Donkin, who served as vice
president for finance and treasurer of the University
from 1957 to 1968. The award is presented to the full
time member of the faculty or staff or to the retiree who
has contributed most to the "economic, physical, mental,
or social welfare of the faculty" of the University. The
contribution of the nominee should be for duties or ser
vices that are above and beyond his or her regularly
assigned duties.

The Barash Award for Haman Service
The Barash Award for Human Service was created in 1975 by the fami
ly of the late Sy Barash. It is an annual award given to the full-time
member of the faculty, staff or student body of the University Park
Campus who has contributed the most, apart from regular duties, to
human causes, public service activities and organizations, or the wel
fare of fellow !rm.

The Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award
The Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award annually recognizes a senior
man and woman who have combined successful athletic participation
with academic excellence. The award is named for Ernest B. McCoy,
who was dean of Penn State's College of Physical Education from
1952 to 1970. He was also the University's athletic director.

The Outstanding Adult Student Award—
Penn State University Park Campus
This award recognizes an undergraduate student at the University Park
campus who has begun or resumed study after age 21 and who demon
strates initiative, tenacity, and flexibility in overcoming obstacles to
furthering his or her education; who serves as a role model for other
adult students by sensitizing the institution to the needs of adult stu
dents and by becoming established as a leader in the peer group; who
achieves academic excellence; and whose goals reflect the values and
ideals of higher education.

This annual award recognizes one undergraduate student who has con
nibuted significantly to the advancement of the international mission
of the University. It is named for the retired deputy vice president for
international programs.

display of excellence in: an academic course of study andlor research
with a significant international component; participation in intenta-
names of recipients is displayed in the Hetzel Union Building.
Recipients are expected to share their talents and expertise with others
throughout the University system during the year following the award
presentation.

The Penn State Excellence in Advising Award
The Penn State Excellence in Advising Award, established by the
Undergraduate Student Governments Academic Assembly and spon
sored by each college, annually honors a full-time faculty member and
one full-time professional advisor from any Penn State location who
has at least two years of advising experience. Selection criteria are
based on excellence in general advising, academic guidance, career
guidance, enthusiasm, and assistance in decision-making and goal set
ting. Award recipients are expected to share their successful advising
techniques and expertise with other faculty and graduate assistants by
participating in lectures, workshops, and symposia throughout the year.

Created in 1997, this award recognizes the overall high-quality perfor
mance of a full-time member of the support staff with at least five years

tional programs and/or field projects; leadership in improving rela
tions among peoples from different regions of the world; and service to
the international community.

Jackson Lethbridge Tolerance Award
This award recognizes two students for outstanding efforts to enhance
the understanding of diverse cultures and create a community where
all individuals are accepted and valued equally. The award is named
for its benefactor, a Penn State alumnus.

Mary Lee Hobbs Steel Emerging Leader Award
The Mary Lee Hobbs Steel Emerging Leader Award was established
this year. This award will honor and recognize outstanding achieve
ment by a sophomore or junior who has demonstrated leadership with
in the campus, the community and the classroom and has demonstrated
creativity, initiative, and continued involvement in the Penn State and
surrounding communities.

The Graduate Student Service Award
The Graduate Student Service Award, established in 1991, recognizes a
graduate student who has best combined high academic achievement
with leadership in University or other public activities.

recipient will have made interacted with students outside class, link
students to opportunities, and help them build their confidence as
learners and potential contributors to society. Three-fifths of the mone
tary award goes directly to the recipient and two-fifths to the
professor's department to be managed by the recipient and used for
extending the kinds of activities the award recognizes.

The Undergrad Program Leadership Award
The Undergraduate Program Leadership Award was established in
2002 to recognize a faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary
leadership benefiting a Penn State undergraduate degree program.
The goal of the award is to recognize those individuals who have major
responsibilities for the delivery of undergraduate education within a
unit and who are providing leadership that has transformed or revital
ized the undergraduate program within the unit in some way.

The Howard B. Palmer Faculty Mentoring Award
The Howard B. Palmer Faculty Mentoring Award honors and recog
nizes outstanding achievement by a faculty member with at least five
years of active service at Penn State who effectively guides and nur
tures the collegial and professional development of junior faculty.
Howard B. Palmer was the senior associate dean of the Graduate
School from 1984 to 1991.

The Dr. James Robinson Equal Opportunity Award
The Dr. James Robinson Equal Opportunity Award was established in
1988 and renamed in 1998 to honor the late Dr. James Robinson, a
Distinguished Alumnus and Former Alumni Council member. This
award recognizes a full-time faculty or, staff member, with at least two
years of active service, who has promoted equal opportunity through
affirmative action and or contributes to enhancing the educational
environment of the University through improving cross-cultural under
standing. This award is sponsored by the Penn State Alumni
Association.

Faculty Scholar Medals
Established in September 1980, this award is given in recognition of
scholarly excellence demonstrated by a single contribution or series of
contributions focusing on a coherent theme. The contribution may be
original basic research in one of five areas: arts and humanities; life
and health sciences; physical sciences; engineering; or social and
behavioral sciences. The attainment for which the medal is given must
have occurred during the three years preceding the award.

The Penn State Award for Faculty Outreach recognizes faculty who

a result of extending their scholarship. It is presented to a full-time fac
ulty member whose primary responsibilities are teaching, research,
andservice. This award is endorsed by the Provost and supported by
the Coordinating Council for Outreach and Cooperative Extension and
Outreach Committee of the Faculty Senate.
