(AP) Singer LeAnn Rimes has ended her yearlong legal standoff with Curb Records and signed a new contract, a spokeswoman for the record company said. Rimes released a statement saying she is "looking for- ward to continuing to evolve creatively and professionally as an artist." "But more impor tant, I am really excited to be able to share my new music with the fans," she said. Rimes claimed she didn't understand the original con tract that she signed when she was 12. In 1996 at 13, she scored the hit "Blue" and became a star. She sued Curb a year ago, shortly after turning 18. In March, a chanepry judge ruled against her request to be released from the contract. Curb released the Rimes album / Need You in January against the singer's wishes. She apologized to her fans for the album on her Web site, calling it "largely unfinished material and songs that didn't make other albums." Terms of the new deal reached with Rimes were not released, Curb's Liz Students By Lynne Funk COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER 1 lafunk@psu.edu While several student organizations came together to aid in the search for missing Penn State student Cindy Song with fliers and moral support, other stu dents have invested their time and efforts by working their way through the rough terrain in the areas surrounding Song's apartment. These students, led by Craig Hall, commander of the Centre County Sher iff's Office Search and Rescue team, have organized three searches in the weeks following Song's disappearance. Of the 30 active members of the team, almost half are Penn State students, Hall said. Hall said he and the group of people interested in the formation of the team found that there were no wilderness medical teams or rescue teams. NEWS IN BRIEF M&Ms show colors with red, white & blue TRENTON, N.J. (AP) Packages of red, white and blue M&Ms will be sold to raise money for disaster relief. The idea came from workers on the M&M assembly line in Hackettstown, N.J., on Sept 11. The candy went into production days later. At first, the patriotic candies were handed out only to rescuers at the World irade Center and Pentagon. "The response that we got from relief workers literally, from every one who saw it was that it was just terrific," said Robert Gamgort, vice president of chocolate for M&M/Mars. This is the first time its has sold the candy for charity. Tomei must separate self from character LOS ANGELES (AP) Marisa Tomei had to step away from her char acter while she was filming In the Bed room. In the movie, which stars Sisty Spacek and Tom Wilkinson, Tomei plays a woman grieving for her mur dered lover. "If you start really getting depressed and like really mop ing, then there's no life in the charac ter," she told reporters recently. "You just can't stay in the tragedy of it, actually. I think it becomes counter- Productive." Ibmei, who won a supporting-actress Oscar for 1992's My Cousin Vmny, said she also had to drop the character between scenes and off the set. In the Bedroom, based on a short story by Andre Dubus and directed by Todd Field, has opened in New York and Los Angeles. It will open nation wide on Christmas Day. "We went to the sheriff and he agreed to sponsor it," Hall said. 'We went pub lic in January of 2000. The planning started two years earlier." Hall said his interest , in the group stemmed from his past. "I've always loved the outdoors and enjoyed emergency services," he said. "I decided that this was the only way I could combine the two of them." Since July, Hall said the team has been called out to help locate someone that is missing about six times. "When we're called out, we get every thing from lost hunters to mentally challenged people who have wandered off," Hall said "One was a 5-year-old who wandered off from a birthday party and who had been missing for a couple of days." The team advertises and recruits new members at the Penn State volunteer fair, with fliers and sometimes through Thursday in a sexual discrimination suit brought against the city by a for mer female police officer there. Louis J. Isaacsohn, defending the city against a lawsuit by Wendy Man nion, said the city endured Mannion's "demoralizing and destructive" influ ence on the department for five years before firing her in May 2000. Psychiatrists will testify that Man nion has a borderline personality disor der and can't understand other points of view, Isaacsohn said. Her attorney Christopher Underhill, said that from the outset, Mannion, who was the only female on the 43- member force, was treated differently. John Lawless announced Friday that he is switching his affilia tion from the Republican to the Democ ratic Party. Lawless, of the 150th district, is infa mous at Penn State for his public con demnation of "Cuntfest" and "Sex Faire," two student-sponsored and con troversial events that promoted empowerment towards women and provided educational workshops. After the events, he successfully pushed to subtract a small amount of state-sponsored funding from Penn State as "punishment" for the contro versial events. Lawless said he is switching his party affiliation because he supports diverse views and is being restricted by the Republican Party. "I will continue to be the same inde pendent thinker that I have always been. I will simply be representing my con stituents as part of a caucus that embraces diversity, instead of one that punishes diversity," Lawless said The change will enable him to better LOCAL REGIONAL FORECAST MAP How to interpret this map: Shades of gray indicate the expected high temperatures for today. The students had to maneuver up steep hills and above creeks without paths, Rodgers said. "I was down on my stomach wriggling under bushes because that was the eas iest way to go," he said. Sarah Sarge, the team's secretary, said she volunteered at numerous loca tions for years and got involved with the search and rescue team after meeting Hall. Sarge said Thursday's search for Song took its toll. "We just walk through and keep our eyes open, looking for anything that would be helpful for police," Sarge said. "It was hard. I'm exhausted. We were looking for her, looking for clues look ing for anything that could help." Ferguson Township Police Lt. Drew Clemson said the department received a tip from a Penn State security guard last week and decided to move on it. become a serve his constituents in Montgomery County, he said. "I refuse to be a puppet of (state house majority leader) John Perzel. I refuse to endure fur ther punishment, because the real vic tims of Perzel's tac tics are my con stituents. I feel I have to do what's right for the people of the 150th district," Lawless added. Lawless was origi nally elected to the state house of representatives as a Democrat in 1990. However, he switched sides before he was sworn in. This most recent switch does not come as a surprise to other Republican state legislators. "I am not surprised he is putting his ego and raw ambition ahead of princi ples and his constituents' needs," Perzel said Lawless' sudden change of political affiliation seems. suspicious,. said Regis Kingera, (non degree-labor and indus trial relations). After the search, which began at about 8 a.m. and continued through the day, Clemson said police did not find any significant clues. He said the group sent out numerous teams to search the areas surrounding Lion's Gate Apartments, 424 Waupelani Drive, as well as the Circleville Farm on Penn State property. The police decided to search the farm area because it was within a mile walk of Song's apartment. Clemson said the department received Song's cell phone records late Friday and is reviewing them. "I'm really surprised with the effort Ferguson Township police is putt ing , into this," Hall said. "The three local police departments are really working hard." No new searches have been planned, Hall said. "Now we're just waiting for some tips." "Our team will be ready," he added. Democrat Kingera said it is ironic that Lawless, the same man who tried to limit a stu dent movement, is now claiming to be pushing diversity "They shouldn't allow him to be in the Democratic Party" he said. "It bog gles my mind that he's even thinking about it." Kingera said he feels certain it is a move made for political gain. "I hate the ones that choose the moral high ground (for votes)," he said College campuses should be a haven for different views and free thought, Kingera said. "Every social change we have is from students," he said, "students and poets." Lawless Democratic members of the state house also are cautious about Lawless' switch. "John is an outspoken legislator, but we're cautious that does not punish open discourse. I'm sure John will be a valuable member of our team and we're thrilled to have him on board," said Democratic House Minority Leader H. William DeWeese.
