NEWS IN BRIEF Rendell checks Murphy with Flyers sweater PITTSBURGH (AP) It was the political equivalent of a hip check. Edward G. Rendell, the former Philadelphia mayor who is now head of the Democratic National Committee, took advantage of his role as emcee for Vice President Al Gore yesterday to jest with Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy about the NHL playoffs. The Philadelphia Flyers are playing the Pittsburgh Penguins in the sec ond round. Pittsburgh has lost le consecutive games in Philadelphia dat ing to December 1994. Rendell called Murphy to the podium at the Westin William Penn and gave him a Flyers sweater with his name and the number one on the back. "He didn't want to run for re-election anyway," Rendell said. Murphy remarked that he had been "set up." He clenched the sweater in a tight ball after Rendell left the stage. "He may be eating crow in about a week," Murphy said. Panel delays action on Mercer Co. bridge HARRISBURG (AP) State utility regulators yesterday postponed a decision on whether to demolish a 126-year-old stone arch that once car ried railroad tracks over a state highway in Mercer County. The arch spanning state Route 58 near its intersection with U.S. Route 322 was slated to be torn down over safety concerns. The bridge leaves an opening just 11 feet high and 20 feet wide for road traffic. About 500 area residents have signed a petition calling for the arch to remain and borough officials in Jamestown backed the movement. The state Public Utility Commission, which has jurisdiction in railroad related matters, ordered the bridge removed in 1993, but an administrative law judge in January recommended keeping the arch in place. The PUC's transportation staff filed an exception to the judge's decision in February, and the postponed order would have removed the structure. CONTACT INFORMATION Address Collegian Inc.
