BASEBALL American League Advertising Marketing Accountin General Business 7 p.m. Thursday April 6 at the Collegian office THE SPORTS BRIEFS Wright named Big Ten Player of the Week The Big Ten named Penn State first baseman Chris Wright its Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday. Wright, a sophomore, had an out standing week at the plate, garnering 12 RBI on six hits, including two dou bles. He scored five runs as well. Last Tuesday in a doubleheader against Bucknell, Wright hit a grand slain and three-run double in the first game all in the seventh inning. The Nit , tany Lions followed his outburst with 15 runs that inning, en route to a 20-6 shellacking of the Bison. Wright's seven RBI in that inning alone are the sec ond most in one game in Penn State history. He added a two-run jack in the second game of that twinbill. In the Lions' 9-2 win against Purdue on Friday, Wright hit a two-run homer in his third at-bat to precipitate a five-run Penn State eighth. Women's track team competes at N.C. State The Penn State Women's Track team opened its spring season at the Atli das Relay Open meet at North Carolina State. Deshaya Williams placed second in a 39-woman field in the discus to give the team its best finish of the meet. Williams also took ninth in the hammer throw. Junior Toyin Augustus placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.6 seconds. Senior Allison Carr placed 17 out of 70 runners in the 1,500 meters while Kim DeNovellis placed 16 out of 58 runners in the 3,000 meters, according to Penn State Sports Information. Freshman Brianne Johnson began her outdoor collegiate career placing fifth in the javelin. The Lady Lions now face Big Ten rivals Purdue and Michigan in a meet Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind. ESPN to air men's gymnastics championships ESPN will air the 2000 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship, at which Penn State won its 10th national championship, at 1 p.m. April 16. Individual finals of the event will also be aired. Lion Brandon Stefaniak won his second consecutive individual title in the Pommel Horse at the championships. Women's soccer secures one more recruit Having already secured a group of four recruits earlier this year, Penn State coach Pat Farmer announced he has signed one more recruit for the Penn State women's soccer team in Stephanie Pezzullo. Pezzullo, a resident of Glocester, RI, has earned NSCAA All-American, 1999 Rhode Island state Player of the Year and 4-time Rhode Island First Team All-State honors for her work with the Rhode Island Rays United club team and the Ponaganset High School soccer team. She has also served on the Under-14, 16 and 17 Olympic Development Program East Regional Teams. "She'll bring forward skills to the back," said Penn State coach Pat Farmer referring to his intentions of moving Stephanie from her natural position of forward back to defender. "She'll have a shot (to start) right away as a freshman." Pezzullo chose Penn State in favor of Boston College, Rhode Island, William & Mary and New Hampshire. Childs, Bryant suspended, fined for fight NEW YORK (AP) Chris Childs of the New York Knicks and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers were fined and suspended by the NBA on Monday for fighting. Childs was suspended without pay for two games and fined $15,000. Bryant was suspended without pay for one game and fined $5,000. in your life?
