Pitt, Steelers close on deal for new complex PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pitts burgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh are close to reaching a deal with a hospital to build a $3O million sports medicine complex where each team would practice. No agreement has been signed, but Steelers publicist Ron Wahl said, "It's pretty close to a go." The deal could be a precursor to Pitt sharing the Steelers' planned new $233 million stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2001. UPMC Health Systems wants to build the practice complex on a 20- to 25-acre South Side site where an LTV steel plant once stood. There would be three outdoor practice fields, an indoor practice field and a large training and sports injury rehabilitation center. The Steelers expect to lose their practice field near Three Rivers Stadium as early as next year, when they hope to begin construc tion on the new stadium. They cur rently divide practice between the grass field and Three Rivers'.
