Street said she remembers one night that was particularly difficult during her sailing trip. “One night we had to row the whole entire night. The water was low and there was no wind,” she said. “We had to paddle because we didn’t want to get caught in the current going the wrong way.” Street said she also has memo ries of the Maine experience. It was the group’s first experience with whitewater boating and Street’s boat overflowed with water. Within 20 seconds, she said she could not move, swim or do anything at all. “That was a real wake up call, MBNA is conveniently located near campus and CATA bus service is available. Ricketts said the students who are involved in the program also learn about team work and develop a sense of camaraderie because most of them do not know each other when they begin the trip. Elko said she went on a trip out West with a member of her Out ward Bound group, and one of the students she met on the trip is now her best friend. “I still keep in touch with all of them,” she said. And for Street, the experience was more than a simple trip. “The whole sense that I got when I was finished with the trip it was like a spiritual rebirth,” she said. OolsMtos CLAD 2-764-96
