—The Daily Collegian Wednesday, March 13, 1996 Sluggers return slugged By BRAD YOUNG Collegian Sports Writer When the baseball team left for California, the team was upbeat and excited about Spring Break in the Golden State. The chance to play against West Coast and national powers like Stanford and California just added to the trip’s attractiveness. Then those teams quickly sub tracted from it. Matched up against squads of way beyond Big Ten caliber, the Lions lost all nine games of the spring trip, getting outscored 71- 21 in the process. So the optimistic smiles of the plane ride out were turned upside down midway through the week after tough guys Santa Clara, Stanford, Cal and Pacific had pounded the Lions and sent them back to their hotel with five loss es and their tails firmly planted between their legs. Not even ace starter Nate Bump could stop the bleeding. He gave up six earned runs in five innings of a 10-0 loss to Stanford last Tuesday. “In the middle of the trip everybody was down about as low as you can be,” sophomore cen- Collegian Inc. reserves the right to release the names of individu als who place advertising in The Daily Collegian. The meeting was held last Thursday. “We didn’t want everybody say ing, ‘What the hell is going on?’ ” Sadlowski said. “We wanted to make sure everybody was work ing to the same goals and not going off on their own.” Other senior members of the team spoke up at the meeting as well. Their intention was to get the younger guys to maintain a level of confidence despite defeat, that they didn’t pack in the week’s final four games before they were even played. Even so, the last quartet of con tests ended the same way the first five did. No wins, nine losses and some sunburned faces accompanied the Lions on their return flight to Happy Valley, an eight-hour redeye from Califor nia to Pittsburgh from Sunday night into Monday morning. Sadlowski couldn’t sleep a wink on the plane, and thought things over on the way back. “In your mind, you don’t want ALASKA SUMMER EMPLOY MENT: Fishing industry, parks, resorts! But there was no avoiding that, as Billotte said the California teams were the best the Lions will ever face, particularly in terms of pitching. The prevailing notion among the team and coaches is that the arms on the staffs they faced last week are a heckuva lot more live ly than any the Lions will face anywhere else. “Every pitcher we saw out there was like a staff ace in the Big Ten,” Sadlowski said. Lion coach Joe Hindelang said the pitching was but one reason for the disappointments. He and Sadlowski agree that fatigue also came into play, with nine games in eight days. “When you’re tired, that just compounds things,” Hindelang said. “Every error or misplay becomes a gorilla on your back.” But Hindelang claims that although the trip added nothing to the win column, it was far from fruitless. He said he is starting to figure out his best lineups, getting peo ple in the right positions in the field and in the batting order. And he, as well as Sadlowski FUN TIMES YOU'LL never forget! After competing in the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals in Teaneck, N.J., last weekend sev eral Penn State fencers are going to learn this the hard way. The Lions qualified the maxi mum number of 10 fencers for the NCAA tournament, but things are not that simple. In each of the five weapons (three men’s, two women’s) the Lions qualified three fencers, meaning there are 15 fencers who could go to NCAAs. Do the math and it becomes clear that several fencers are going to be left out of the final equation. “It is tough because there are three or four of us in women’s epee who did well at regionals and only two of us will get to go to NCAAs,” women’s epee fencer Polo Wagner said. “We practice as a team up until the day we leave and those who don’t make it still pull for those who do make it.” However there is one exception to this theory. In men’s foil four fencers qualified, meaning two of them will be left on the outside looking in when the final selections are made. Classifieds are arranged in the following order.. In actuality those “left on the outside” could still travel to the tournament in New Haven, Conn., at the end of the month as alternates. The Lion fencers who now await the committee’s final decision are: Polo Wagner, Wendy Hall and Gena Henderson in women’s epee; Olga Kalinovskaya, Sibyl Goldstein and Carin Wolf in women’s foil; Serge Lilov, Jason Levin and Brian Walther in men’s sabre; Tobias Darnstadt, Dave Lidow, Nik Lezha va and Wes Waldron in men’s foil; and Jon Walheim, Jeff Feinblatt and Tom Peng in men’s epee. No matter who qualifies, Penn State coach Emmanuil Kaidanov is confident he will be sending the strongest possible team. “All of our fencers were seeded highly and they all placed well proving they deserved those high seedings,” he said. “This gives me confidence heading into NCAAs.” Even though several of his fencers did not place as highly as they could have, Kaidanov said that wasn't what was important.
