—The Daily Collegian Wednesday, March 13, 1996 Surfing a little more fun Penn State sports fans now can turn to their computer screens for up to-date Lion information. By ROBERT LYONS Collegian Sports Writer No longer do Penn State sports fans have to look at newspapers and watch ESPN to find out the lat est information about their favorite Penn State sports team. Lion enthu siasts can now find many of their favorite sports on the Internet. There lies an abundance of infor mation box scores, statistics, video footage and many other little tidbits that cannot be packaged together in other mass media as it is on the Internet. Students and alumni are now beginning to set up and run their very own World Wide Web pages from their personal computers. Patrick Besong, a 1981 Penn State graduate and currently a graphics designer for the Universi ty, runs two pages for the sport he participated in while at Penn State gymnastics. Besong has used his background in graphic design to develop his men’s and women’s gymnastic pages. His department of graphic design is currently plan ning on setting up other home pages for various University ser vices with the gymnastic pages used as a sample of what can be done on the Internet. “We offer this service, really I enjoyed it because of my previous ties with the gymnastic teams,” Besong said. “I am having a lot of fun with it.” Both pages are similar. The men’s page has a team photo and the women’s page has a picture of gymnasts Bridget Foley and Michelle Manzolillo. Both gymnas tics coaches are pictured with a quote next to their names on their respective pages. There are action photos that can be downloaded along with a synopsis of the meets. Besong said his page has attract ed a lot of attention and his viewer ship increased when he added COVER 237-049^^DSQS^9^' toeDnesoay Use yourhead. Smart people recycle aluminum, paper and glass. Give a hoot. Don’t pollute. Forest Service, L’.S.D.A. PS just got Quick Time movies. Besong went to practice with his camcorder and recorded the gymnasts in action. These videos were transferred into Quick Time and added to the web pages. They can be downloaded and watched on a computer in a matter of seconds. “This is definitely one of the best World Wide Web pages for college gymnastics,” said freshman gym nast Dominic Valenti. The Penn State Sports Informa tion Office also has a page on the Internet. This page is an official University page, whereas the other pages are people doing it on their own time. The page includes pre views for upcoming games, recent box scores and summaries of pre vious games, a link to USAToday and ESPN home pages on stories of previous games. This page also includes links to other Big Ten school’s home pages. Other sports teams have infor mation on schedules and updated scores, including baseball, tennis, women’s soccer and fencing. A Penn State alumnus has set up an easy-to-use page with links to every Penn State sport that has a world wide web page. Why do people make these home pages if they don’t work for the University? 1990 Penn State grad Patrick Larkin, currently a gradu ate student at Lehigh University explained, “Because I wasn’t get ting enough information from Penn State on the Internet, so I basically do this to get the alumni informa tion about the football team.” Larkin said he gets a lot of posi tive feedback about his page from Penn State alumni and an abun dance of information from them like recruiting facts. The page includes details of Penn State’s performance in the Outback Bowl, links to in-depth features on Penn State recruiting and a 1996 schedule. Summaries of every football game from the 1995 season can also be found on Larkin’s page. For those who like multimedia items, a photo gallery and an audio sample of the lion’s roar can be downloaded. Frank Bruno will be the champion for the first time in a heavyweight title match when he fights Mike Tyson. For the fourth time, Bruno will be the underdog. Tyson was a 10-1 favorite to win the WBC championship from Bruno on Saturday night in the MGM Grand Garden. Iron Mike also was a 10-1 choice when he stopped Bruno in the fifth round of an undisputed title defense Feb. 25, 1989. The 34-year-old Bruno also was the underdog when he was stopped in the 11th round by Tim Wither spoon in a bid for the WBA title July 9, 1986; when he was stopped in the seventh round by Lennox Lewis in a WBC title bid Oct. 1, 1993; and when he outpointed Oliv er McCall for the WBC title last Sept. 2. “The Rocky story is peanuts to what I’ve been through,” said Bruno, who was thought to be fin ished after he was stopped by Lewis. But he refused to retire, stopping Jesse Ferguson in one round in his only fight in 1995 and winning on two quick knockouts before chal lenging McCall. “I’m fighting for queen, country and myself, for my pride and digni ty,” said Bruno, who also claims that he, not Lewis, is the British boxer to win a heavyweight title in this century. “Lennox Lewis is Canadian, not British, and to be honest Riddick Bowe gave the title to Lennox Lewis,” Bruno said Tuesday. Lewis was born in England, but grew up in Canada and won an Olympic gold medal for Canada in 1988. He became the WBC champi on when Bowe was stripped of the title for refusing to defend it against Lewis, who lost it when he was stopped in the second round by McCall on Sept. 24, 1994. “I’m just so damn grateful to be here,” Bruno said. “It feels very nice. Frank Bruno WBC heavyweight champ that while Bruno is getting $6 mil lion, Tyson is getting about $3O mil lion for the fight that will be seen on pay-per-view television in the United States and for the first time in Britain. “Would you be happy if you were the champion and were being treat ed like the challenger?” asked Bruno, who made $3.8 million in his first fight with Tyson, who made about $8 million. In that first fight, Bruno was knocked down just seconds into the opening round, but then he rocked Tyson with a tremendous left hook to the jaw. In a television promo for the rematch, Tyson is quoted as saying that was hardest he’s ever been hit. “I believe that’s just a commer cial,” Tyson said. “Now is payback time,” said Bruno, who feels Tyson is less of a fighter than he was in their first match while Bruno has improved. “Now is time for revenge. He’s got all the money and whatever. I’m here to take him out. I think he’s bored. I think prison hurt him very, very badly.” Tyson, whose has fought just twice for a little more than three full rounds since coming back in August from a layoff of a little more than four years, says he is focused on boxing. He said he was not focused when he fought Bruno in 1989 only 11 days after he and Robin Givens were divorced in the Dominican Republic. Two fights later, Tyson lost the undisputed title when he was knocked out in the 10th round by James “Buster” Douglas on Feb. 11, 1990. While not saying Bruno is a better fighter than he was in 1989, Tyson does think he’s a dif ferent fighter. “He runs more than he did before,” Tyson said.
