I always bitch and moan about something. But watching Penn State and Purdue battle for the Big Ten women's basketball tournament championship in the Hinkle Field house was a real treat. I was actu ally disappointed to see Tina Nicholson ice the win with two free throws with just under four sec onds remaining. I was greedy. I wanted five more minutes. I want ed the game to go into overtime. but it wasn't just the game that made the tournament great. It was also the fans. Most of the people around State College are too finicky, especially the Penn State student body. I was ashamed to be a Penn State student when I saw the other schools' followings. Granted, from State College it's a long drive to Indianapolis, but even our home crowds are not as fired up as the crowds of Hinkle Field house. These fans were so into the tournament and outcome that they stayed in town even after their team lost to watch the finals. The funniest were the lowa fans. The Hawkeyes lost in the semifi nals to Purdue, but their fans stuck around to cheer against the Boil ermakers. They joined in the cheer "We are Penn State" and were loud er than some of the Nittany and Lady Lion home games. Sorry Penn State fans, contrary to what you might think, you defi nitely are not the best fans in the world. You are not even the best in the Big Ten. I do think you are the most stubborn. Although, I com mend those Lady Lion fans who were here. The situation is not even isolated to basketball, either. Some of you won't even crawl out of bed to watch a noon football game at Beaver Stadium. Speaking of arenas... Friday, March 15 reporter wax nostalgic Rob Amen The aura surrounding Hinkle Fieldhouse was incredible. Sitting about 10 minutes outside of down town Indianapolis on the campus of Butler University. This fieldhouse made you forget that sports in America, both amateur and profes sional, are self-destructing. The old rafters, bleacher seating at the top level, the huge windows at the top of the ancient structure this was where basketball was meant to be played. In a basketball world where everyone is concerned with them selves and money, holding the Big Ten women's basketball tourna ment at the aged fieldhouse stands as a model to be imitated. No where else do you see greed and money as evident than in the world of sports. Everyone has their hand out, saying they need more money. They are all concerned about outstanding contracts and top notch facilities. I have a message for all of those people there is no way the tour nament could have been any better if it was held at a newer arena, such as the Bryce Jordan Center. If it was, it would have probably detracted from the excitement. Heck, you know Hinkle Field house had to be the right choice, even the movie Hoosiers was filmed here, at least the state championship game. Hinkle Fieldhouse is basketball If the Big Ten men's teams are considering a postseason tourna ment like their women counter parts, they would be wise to choose a site at Hinkle. For those of you who don't know what the historic fieldhouse looks like, picture Rec Hall with win dows at the top and with another tier of seating at the top. Don't get me wrong, these new arenas are nice, but they isolate the fans from the game because of seating arrangements. The fans are too far away from the floor, at least at the Jordan Center. That is why I dislike it so much. For as much money as the Uni versity spent on it, you think it could have been better for the fans. For the players and coaches it is great, but I think it takes away from the fans, especially after being in Rec Hall for so long. Yeah, yeah, I can hear the propo nents now, "Look at all the money it yields." That's great, but if the Universi ty wanted the best of both worlds, it would have modeled the Jordan Center after Ohio State's St. John Arena. There the seating runs upward, not outward, creating a much more intimate setting, and it can still pack nearly 14,000 people into it. Ohio State is in the early stages of constructing a new 19,000 seat facility by the year 1998. Bad idea Then again, I'm a traditionalist. I don't even want to see professional baseball go to interleague play. By the way, whatever happened to Jimmy Chitwood?
